Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed for men once to die, and after this damnation, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and unto those who expectantly wait for him he shall appear a second time, without reference to sin, to bring deliverance.
Jesus Christ came the first time to carry away our sins. When Jesus appears again, for the second time, it will be to bring deliverance to those who expectantly wait for Him.
Psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
To bring deliverance to those who expectantly await for Him. Jesus Christ bore our sins on the cross, and he cast them away as far as the east is from the west. Now we do not have to fear the damnation that comes after death. Instead, we eagerly with expectant hearts wait for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. For when Jesus comes, our deliverance will be revealed and we will receive the goal of our faith, the deliverance of our souls.
We have been delivered. Delivered from condemnation and redeemed from the powers of darkness. On the day we accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Deliverer, we were delivered, born again, taken out of the kingdom of darkness and brought into the kingdom of Jesus Christ. But we are yet receive the deliverance of our soul; and our soul still suffers (or is grieved as Peter puts it) from many trials and temptations.
We are delivered from our sins and the powers of darkness, but no matter how good we have it in this world and no matter how good we have it in Paradise when we die. This deliverance that we now have is not the goal of our faith; that deliverance, the deliverance of our soul is still to come.
1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy has begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fades not away, reserved in the sky for you,
When we are born again, it is into a lively hope. The hope of an eternal inheritance, reserved for us in the sky. Apart from all the blessings I have already received and will receive from God my Father in this life, I also have an eternal inheritance, reserved for me in the sky. It has my name on it and it is my inheritance.
It is your inheritance.
1 Peter 1:4b reserved in the sky for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith unto deliverance ready to be revealed in the last time.
God; through Jesus Christ, has delivered us, and we are being kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation deliverance. Although we are delivered, we have not yet received this deliverance that we are being kept for. This deliverance is ready and is being kept for us in the sky, to be revealed in the Last Time. The Last Time can equally be translated as the Last Day. According to the Scriptures, the resurrection of the will not be until the Last Day (See “The Last Day” on page 53).
1 Peter 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, you are distressed by various trials, 7 that the testing of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it be tried by fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.
This appearing of Jesus Christ is the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. According to Hebrews 9:28; Jesus Christ is coming a second time to bring deliverance.
1 Peter 1:7b and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ, 8 who having not seen you love. In who though you do not see him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 receiving the end of your faith—the deliverance of your souls.
Or as the N.I.V. puts it, “receiving the goal of your faith – the salvation of your souls.”
One of the greatest paradoxes of the Christian faith is; if you want deliver your soul, first you must lose it.
Mark 8:34 When he had called the people and his disciples to him, he said unto them, “Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 35 For whoever desires to deliver his soul will lose it, but whoever loses his soul for my sake and the good news, he will deliver it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”
The goal of our faith is the deliverance of our soul. But when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Deliverer, we don’t gain the deliverance of our soul; we lose our soul, we lose our self-will, we lose our self wants, we lose our self-desires, and we take on the will, wants and desires of God the Father. But in return, the goal of our faith, the deliverance of our soul, is kept in the sky for us, ready to be revealed on the Last Day when Jesus Christ comes again.
Yes, we have been delivered out of the kingdom of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God, but we have not yet received goal of our faith, the deliverance of our souls.
