The Seven Church Ages - 27. A Pillar in the Temple of God

27. A PILLAR IN THE TEMPLE OF GOD.

We, the Church, are the temple of God, built on the foundation of the teachings of the apostle and prophets (Ephesians 2:20) which includes all the teachings of God's written word.  In I Peter 2:4 - 8, we are told when we come to Christ (who is the chief corner stone), we come “as living stones to be built up” into a “spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” Then in Revelation we read that Jesus will make him who overcomes, a pillar in the temple of God.

Revelation3:12 "He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name. 13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”’

As with the other letters to the seven churches, this letter also carries a promise to the over comers. When we are first born again into the kingdom of God, we become as living stones fitted into the Church. Then, as we humble ourselves before God and grow in the strength of the Lord, we become pillars in the Church, which is the temple of God.

In Bible times, pillars were erected for two purposes. 1: To hold up the roof, as a shelter and protection to others. 2: As a memorial in honour of a great person whose name would be written on the pillar. Overcomers as pillars in the temple of God perform both purposes. 1: Overcomers, as pillars in the temple of God, standing in the strength of the Lord provide shelter and protection for those who honour and recognize them as God's appointed servants.  2: Overcomers, as pillars in the temple of God, stand firm as a manorial in honour of God. Therefore it pleases God to write on the pillar His new name, the name of Jesus Christ which is above all names.

Like most of the promises to the overcomers (given in these seven letters), they are two-fold promises; both a promise to be fulfilled in this life and a promise to be fulfilled in the resurrection to eternal life. Overcomers in this life are pillars in the temple of God, and they shall remain pillars in the temple of God after the resurrection.

To the Jews there was only one spiritual house in which the holy priest offered up sacrifices acceptable to God, and that was the temple of God. For the born again believers in Jesus Christ, we become the temple of God, “as living stones to be built up” into a “spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”

The day we die to self and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour we become a living stone in the temple of our God. This is our eternal destiny, but we must be careful how we build, for how we build in this present life, determines our eternal place in God’s temple, and each one’s work will be tested by fire at the coming of the Lord.

I Corinthians3:9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. 10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 Each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.                                                                                                                              16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy which temple you are.

Yes there is a day coming; a day in which the hour of trial shall come upon the whole world to test those who dwell on the earth. During that hour all the wicked shall be destroyed, while the children of God shall be protected in their dwelling by the blood of the Lamb; just like the children of Israel were protected by the blood of their lamb, when the plague of death passed through Egypt. After the hour of trial, Jesus Christ the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings; and you shall go out and grow fat like stall-fed calves. You shall trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet (Malachi 4:2 &3).

Do not be deceived, for if you do not remain faithful and hold fast to what you have, you could lose your crown of life (Rev. 3:11). The Spirit of God dwells in you. You are the temple of God, and if anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. (I Corinthians 3:16 – 17).

Revelation3:13 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
