Romans  8:19  For all creation is waiting with eager expectation for the revealing of the sons of God.

All creation in this verse means all nations and all people groups of the world are waiting with eager expectation for the revealing of the sons of God.

Who are the sons of God?

Romans  8:14  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

What leads you? Are you lead by the lust of the flesh and the desires of the soul or are you lead by the Spirit of God.

If you are lead by the lust of the flesh or the desires of the soul, then you are a son of the devil. But if you are led by the Spirit of God, then you are a son of God.

Galatians  3:26 For you are all the sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

We are sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Like all things in the kingdom, it is by the grace of God through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God has prepared before that we should walk in them (Ephesians 2:8 – 10).

How many of us are sons of God? As many of you as have been baptized into Christ.

Question:

How do we come to know Jesus Christ as the Son of God?

A question often asked concerning the deity of Jesus Christ, is how come we know Jesus Christ as the only begotten of the Father, if the Son like the Father had no beginning? To answer that question, first let us consider, how come we are known as the sons of God?

Jesus Christ is known as The Son of God, and we, the born again believers in Jesus Christ, are known as the sons of God. How come?

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the sky in Christ: 4 Just as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy without blame before him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to himself according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he has made us highly favoured in the beloved.

Before the foundation of the world, every person that would ever live was both predestined to be born on this earth and predestined to be adopted as sons of God. In Biblical language, to be adopted as a son, means to be legally recognized and declared by the father to be his son.

Biblical adoption is not the recognizing of a baby into the family; it is the public recognition of a mature son as heir to all that is the father’s.

In the ancient Jewish world a male child and heir was considered to be a child and no different from a slave, until the time appointed by the father. At the appointed time, the father would take his male child and heir to a public place, and there in front of witnesses he would declare; “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.” From that moment on the child was legally recognized as the father’s son.

Before God laid the foundations of this world, it was his intention that we all would be adopted as sons of God. But when we were born form out of our mother’s womb and into this world, we were not even considered to be children of God. God does not even give us the legal right to become his child, until we first choose to receive Jesus Christ and believe in His name.

John 1:12 For as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become the children of God.

Although believing, and having become heirs of God, we did not differ at all from a slave, until the time appointed by God our Father. The time when God our Father would take us to a public place and declare; “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.” And that public place is at our baptism into Christ. For it is there God’s Word declares us to be his sons (Galatians 3:26 – 4:7).

Galatians 3:26 For you are all the sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Although on the day we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Deliverer we are born again into the kingdom of God, it is not until our baptism into Christ, that the gift of the Holy Spirit comes upon us and we are legally adopted as a son of God.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

The Greek word translated as adoption in verse 15, does not mean to be adopted as a child; it means to be adopted as an adult son, with all power and authority over the father’s estate.

In order to legally become The Son of God; Jesus first had to become both a child and an heir of God. Then at the time appointed by God the Father, Jesus was taken to a public place, his baptism, where God the Father declared; “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.”  It was then that Jesus Christ became the Only Begotten Son of God.

The overall content of the Old Testament Scriptures is such that we can say beyond reasonable doubt, The God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit have always existed as One God yet three persons. Although before the beginning they did not relate to each other as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for the purpose of the redemption of mankind, God the Son submitted himself to God the Father, and took upon himself the role of a child of God; a child who is no different to a slave.

Then at his baptism, God the Father declared over Jesus, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” In this way Jesus legally became the only begotten of God the Father.

The Psalmist is told of a coming day when God would set his king upon Mt Zion and decree “You are my Son; this day I have begotten you.” And God the Father will make God the Son his firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

Psalm 2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. 7 I will declare the decree: the LORD has said unto me, you are my Son; this day have I begotten you.

Psalm 89:26  He shall cry unto me, you are my father, my God, and the rock of my deliverance. 27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

John writes (John 1:14)

“We looked closely at is glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father.”

In this verse, it is the Greek word hos, (meaning, as in that manner or as in like manner) which is here translated into the English word as.

It is the Greek word monogenes, (meaning only born or first born) which is here translated as begotten.

We are sons of God, not because we were born sons of God; but because God the Father looked closely at us and saw us as sons of God, and then at our baptism into Christ, God the Father declared us to be sons of God.

Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, not because he was the first born or only born of God, but because God the Father looked closely at Jesus and saw him as his only begotten Son, and then at his baptism, God the Father declared Jesus to be his only begotten Son.

God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all one God. The Holy Trinity is One God yet three persons, all having no beginning and no end.

Jesus Christ became just like us.

Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and was made in the likeness of men.

Jesus Christ who being equal to God, made himself of no reputation to become just like us.

John  1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Verse  14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we have looked closely at his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Word was God, yet he was made flesh and bone, just like us and dwelt among us

Hebrews  2:17  Therefore it was necessary, he in all things had to be made like his brethren

For God’s plan of redemption the Word, God himself had to become just like us.

Many of us read about the great and mighty works that Jesus Christ performed here on earth, and say “Jesus Christ could do these things because he was God”.

Yes Jesus Christ was God come to earth, but that is not why he could perform mighty works.

Jesus was made flesh just like us and that is why Jesus as a child of God, could do not mighty works. But at his baptism the power and authority of God came upon Jesus Christ, and from then on he could do mighty works because God was with him.

And this means, because Jesus Christ became just like us, we to at our baptism can receive this same power and authority of God, and we to from then on can do mighty works because Christ is with us.

John  14:12 Truly, truly, I say unto you, he that believes in me, the works that I do, he shall also do; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

So not only is it possible for us to do the same works Jesus Christ did, we can do greater works than Jesus did.

Those who are lead by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.

The following two passages from the Bible identify those who are the sons of God.

Galatians 3:26 For you are all the sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

First we will look at the out working of the Spirit of God coming upon Jesus Christ and leading him in his daily walk with God the Father. After all, Jesus Christ is the example that we should live by.

John 1:32 And John testified, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from the sky like a dove, and it remained upon him.  33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, the same said unto me, upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, this is he whom baptizes in the Holy Spirit. 34 And I saw, and testified that this is the Son of God.

Matthew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, looking he saw the sky opened unto him, and the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And listen! A voice from the sky, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.  4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit - - - - - - - - - - - -

Acts 10:36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 37 That word, I say, you know, which was published throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

• It was not until he was baptized in water, that the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus Christ and remained upon Him. (John 1:33)

• It was not until he was baptized in water, that Jesus Christ was baptized in the Holy Spirit and power. (Acts 10:37)

• It was not until after He was both baptized in water and the Holy Spirit, that God the Father declared Jesus Christ to be his Son. (Matthew 3:16 - 17)

• It was not until after he was both baptized in water and the Holy Spirit, that Jesus was lead by the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 4:1)

• It was not until after he was both baptized both in water and the Holy Spirit that Jesus Christ did any mighty works. (Acts 10:37 & John 2:11)   Has believers in the gospel of Jesus Christ, we follow his example.

 • It is not until we are baptized with the baptism of repentance, that we will receive the promised gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the deliverance from sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is unto you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call.”

• It is not until we are baptized for repentance, and the Holy Spirit has come upon us, that we also receive power and authority. The same power and authority that Jesus Christ received when the Holy Spirit came upon him.

Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit has come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.

• It is not until after we have been baptized into Christ and are lead by the Holy Spirit, that God the Father declares us to be His sons.  (Galatians 3:26 – 27, & Romans 8:14)

• After we have chosen to believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to obey his commands and follow his teachings, we too like Jesus Christ will do many mighty works.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go into all the world, and preach the good news to all creation. 16 He that believes and is baptized shall be delivered; but he that believes not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 they shall take up snakes; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. 19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into the sky, and sat on the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

We are to go and preach the good news unto all the nations of the world, baptizing all who believe and they shall be delivered.

But that is not where it ends. Jesus goes on to say these signs shall follow them that believe.

When we go out and preach the good news, those who believe the good news of Jesus Christ and are baptized will be delivered. Then as they go forth and preach everywhere, the Lord will work with them, and confirming the word with signs following.

This miracle working power that has been given to us, to confirm the word we speak; will also be given to those who will believe the word we preach to them and are baptized into Christ.

1: They will speak with new tongues.

2: They will cast out demons.

3: They shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.

4: Anything poison will not harm them.

5: They will speak with new tongues.

Throughout the book of Acts, usually as soon as new believer believed, they were baptized in water, the Holy Spirit came upon them and they spoke with new tongues.

Today, instead of this all happening at once, we tend to spread it out over a week or two, sometimes months or even years. Some of us never end up speaking in tongues, let alone casting out demons and healing the sick.

I am not going to say you are not delivered if you don’t speak in tongues. But let us consider a natural born baby. If a natural baby grows up not being able to speak in their natural tongue they are considered to have a serious handicap. So it is in the spiritual; if you are born again as a child of God and you are unable to speak with new tongues, spiritually you have a serious handicap.

If you are Christian and you have not yet been through the waters of baptism you need to arrange with your pastor about being baptized in water and baptized in the Holy Spirit as soon as possible.

If you have done these things, and as yet you have not or cannot speak with new tongues, you need to speak about this with your pastor as soon as possible.

2: They will cast out demons.

3: They shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.

Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

It was not because Jesus Christ was God that he could do these things, for Jesus had become just like us. He could do these things because God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and power, and because God was with him.

Likewise we to can do these things, because God, through Jesus Christ has anointed us with the Holy Spirit and power, and Christ is with us.

Jesus Christ went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Deliverance and healing go hand in hand. Without a deliverance ministry, you cannot have a very successful healing ministry.

For this and other reasons it is usually best for disciples when going out into the world to preach the good news, cast out demons and heal the sick to work in pairs. When Jesus Christ sent out the twelve and then the seventy, he sent them out in pairs, and Paul the apostle rarely travelled alone.

According to Acts 10:38 those who are sick are oppressed of the devil; and those who have been healed were oppressed by the devil.

All too often we as Christians get all hung up on the question of whether or not a Christian can be possessed or oppressed by the devil.

Let us consider Jesus Christ for a moment.

Matthew 4:1 Jesus was then led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. - - - - - - - -   9 And (the devil said) unto him, All these things will I give you, if you will fall down and worship me. 10 Then said Jesus unto him, Get away Satan: for it is written, you shall worship the Lord you God, and him only shall you serve.

Jesus Christ was tempted by the devil. What was the devil attempting to do? He was attempting to oppress and possess Jesus Christ. And what did Jesus Christ do? Jesus loosed Satan from him and cast him away; by

1: Telling him to go away.

2: Standing on the word of God.

It is written

James 4:7 Therefore submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

It does not matter whether the devil is tempting you, like he tempted Jesus, or whether the devil is oppressing or possessing someone; the way to remove Satan or to become free from the power of Satan is

1: Submit yourselves to God.

2: Resist the devil.

3: Tell him to go and he will flee from you.

So don’t get all hung up on whether a Christian can have a demon of not; tell that demon to go.

Matthew 12:28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.  29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? And then he will spoil his house.

How does Jesus Christ cast out demons? Answer; by the Spirit of God.

How do we cast out demons? Answer; by the Spirit of God.

Luke 11:20 But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.

If an ant crawls on my leg, I get my finger and I crush it dead. When I cast out demons, it is as if God crushes them with his finger. And it will be the same with you. Whenever you cast out demons, it is as if God is crushing them with his finger.

No wonder whenever you submit to God and resist the devil he will flee from you.

Luke 11:21 When a strong man armed keeps his house, his goods are in peace:

Who is the strong man? Satan is the strong man. Now it may not be Satan himself who is oppressing or possessing the person you are delivering of demons, but they are there by Satan’s power and authority. So Satan is the strong man that you need to bind.

Luke 11:22 But when one stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he takes from him all his armour in which he trusted, and divides his spoils.

Jesus Christ is stronger than Satan, and on the cross Jesus Christ overcame Satan and disarmed him.

Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he has quickened together with him, having forgiven all your trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of the law that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers; He made a show of them publicly, triumphing over them in it.

How has Jesus Christ disarmed Satan?

1: By forgiving all trespasses and sins.

2: By blotting out the handwriting of law that was against us, taking it away and nailing it to the cross.

When we are delivering the captives from Satan, we need to remind him, that on the cross Jesus Christ defeated and disarmed him, and that we have been justified through the blood of Jesus Christ and delivered from the law of sin and death

Not only does this remind Satan and his demons that they are defeat, it also reminds us and builds up the faith of the one who is being justified and delivered sin and death.

Romans 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

Don’t get too hung up on trying to name the demons. When casting out or sending demons away Jesus usually called them Satan or by how they oppressed people. He called them deaf and dumb spirits, the spirit of infirmity (or sickness); if people are involved in witchcraft, lust or murder; cast out the spirits of witchcraft, lust and murder; just call it as you see it. Has you grow in the strength and knowledge of the Lord you will also grow in the gift of the discerning of spirits.

Don’t send demons to hell. Jesus Christ never did and we should follow his example. Just send them away and they will go. If they don’t, God will send them to hell.

It is not unusual for a person to have one or two demons which have a great strong hold in their mind or body, and exercise great control over that person. These demons will often allow you to cast out a number of lesser demons, and then lie low, hoping you will over look them. In such cases, take the person you are ministering healing and deliverance to; back to a prayer of repentance, renouncing any past sins, especially any cult activity.

Luke 11:23 He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathers not with me scatters. 24 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, I will return unto my house where I came out. 25 And when he comes, he finds it swept and in order. 26 Then goes he, and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than at first.

Casting out demons is not a substitute for repentance or for becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. If we sin, we invite demons into our lives. If we cast demons out of a sinner, who does not or will not repent and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer; those demons we cast out will come back bringing more with them, and the last state of that man is worse than at first.

3: They shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.

If someone has a cut finger or a broken leg, they do not have a demon of cut finger or a demon of broken leg.  So do use a little discernment as to what is and what is not demonic activity.

However most sicknesses are the result of demonic activity. For example a virus is usually the result demonic activity. The demon can release the virus into the person, then the virus causes other problems. These viruses can usually be quickly removed by first declaring the sins the sick person forgiven and then binding Satan and commanding the demon to leave. Then laying hands on the sick person, releasing the power of the Holy Spirit to heal and restore to wholeness. It is not unusual for the sick person to feel a sudden and noticeable improvement as the demon leaves, then once the demon has left, the body which has been damaged begins to recover.

It is more than helpful for the person who has just be delivered of the demon to understand what is going on. For some times the demon will come back before they are fully recovered, in which case they need to again, strongly tell that demon to go, and once again declare they are healed in Jesus name.

Amen.

For all creation is waiting with eager expectation for the revealing of the sons of God (Romans 8:19). Will you answer the call?

John  4:35 Do you not say, there are yet four months, and then comes the harvest? Look and see, I say unto you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are already white unto harvest.

Matthew 9:37 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few;  38 Pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Fasting and praying.

Matthew 17:15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is an epileptic, and suffers terribly: for many times he has fallen into the fire, and into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him. 17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him here to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the demon; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, Why could we not cast him out? 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say unto this mountain, Be removed from here to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21 Howbeit this kind does not go out but by prayer and fasting.

In this case Jesus first cast the demon out, then healing follows.

The disciples could not cure the boy.

The reason why they could not heal the boy, was because of their lack of faith to believe. However we don’t need a lot of faith, only a little mustard seed size faith is all you need. What counts, is what is your faith in.

The Psalmist writes:

Psalm 3:3 But you, O LORD, are a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of my head.

While Paul writes:

Ephesians 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

God is our shield of faith. How big is your God? It doesn’t matter how small your faith is, as long as your faith is in the one and only Almighty God.

However this kind of demon only comes out by prayer and fasting.

Now when the boy was brought to Jesus Christ to be healed, Jesus never stopped to pray and fast. He didn’t tell them to go away for a few days while I pray and fast for the boy. In fact when Jesus Christ administered deliverance and healing, he rarely prayed for deliverance or healing. Usually he just commanded the demon leave and the sick to be cured and be whole.

While it is appropriate for the children of God to pray to the Father in the name of Jesus Christ for healing, in most cases a son of God should command the demons leave, in the name of Jesus Christ and then command the body be healed.

Jesus Christ has given us all power and authority to do these things, he therefore he expects us to do them. However he does expect us to daily pray and read our Bible. Daily prayer helps us to become at one with Jesus Christ, just as God the Son and God the Father are One. Daily Bible reading help us to know God, and knowing God helps build up our faith in God.

Fasting

Matthew 9:14 Then the disciples of John came to him Jesus, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples fast not? 15 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bride chamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.

Why do we pray and fast?

Perhaps God’s idea of fasting is different to ours. Let us look at what God tells us about fasting.

Isaiah 58:6 This is not the fast that I have chosen? Is it not to lose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? 7 Is it not to give your bread to the hungry and that you bring the poor that are cast out, into your house? When you see the naked, that you cloth him; and that you hide not yourself from your own flesh?

Fasting is not just about going without food; Godly fasting should create in you a great love and compassion for the lost, the poor, the sick and the oppressed. With most of the miracles Jesus Christ performed, he was moved by this great love and compassion.

If you desire a great healing and deliverance healing ministry, you need to hunger for this God given love and compassion.

John  13:34 A new commandment I give you, that you love one another; as I have loved you; that also you should love one another. 35 by this all men will know you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

As we go out into the world preaching the good news about Jesus Christ, sign and wonders will follow, and these signs will grab the attention of many. But unless the lost see and feel the love of God, radiating from God through you to them, they will never be delivered from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God.

All creation is waiting with eager expectation for the revealing of the sons of God ( Romans 8:19).

1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit all. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another various kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But one and the selfsame Spirit, works all these things distributing to each man his own gifts of the Spirit as he wills.

The question is often asked, what gift of the Holy Spirit do you have? Let me ask the follow questions. Did Paul only operate in one gift of the Holy Spirit or several? Did Peter only operate in one gift of the Holy Spirit or several? What about Jesus Christ, did Jesus only operate in one gift of the Holy Spirit or several. Paul, Peter and Jesus Christ all operated in several gifts of the Holy Spirit. Given that Jesus became just like us and set an example for us to follow, then we should all, as sons of God desire to operate in several, if not all the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue love, desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

Without love we are nothing but as sounding brass or a clanging cymbal, therefore we are to pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, which we can use to express God’s love towards mankind; but especially we are to desire the gift of prophesy.

In the contents of 1st Corinthians chapters 2, 3 & 4 we are to desire spiritual gifts; not one, but rather a plurality of spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. Not only is it more profitable to prophesy in a known tongue than it is to speak in an unknown, the gift of prophecy is like a key that opens the door to operating in many of the other gifts of the Holy Spirit.

For when you prophecy you must first listen to God, hear from God, understand the voice of God; then in faith you obey and speak forth the word of God. Regardless whether you speak a word of wisdom, knowledge, prophecy, or move in the gifts of deliverance and healings, it works the same way.  First you must listen to God, hear from God, understand the voice of God; then in faith obey and act on the word of God. Therefore I say the gift of prophesy is the key that opens the door to moving in all the other gifts of the Holy Spirit. Therefore desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.
