2. THE LAST 10½ YEARS BEFORE THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS CHRIST.

alt

Possible coming world events, leading up to the last ten-and-a-half-years:

Many Christians believe that the Church Age as we know it, will last about 2,000 years, climaxing with the return of Jesus Christ in the flesh and the resurrection of the dead.  As the Church age started in A.D. 32, this means we can expect the return of Jesus Christ about the year 2,032.  My own thoughts are that this may be true.  However before Jesus Christ returns to earth (whether He returns in another 10 years, a 100 years or a 1,000 years from now) there is a whole chain of events yet to happen, that the Bible tells us will happen over the last 10½ years before the return of Jesus Christ; thus the title this book "The Last 10½ Years before the return of Jesus Christ."

But even before we enter into the last 10½ years, the map of Europe and the Middle East shall be redrawn. To start with the days of the European Common Market are numbered. Currently much of the Moslem world is in turmoil because of terrorism and civil wars. Because of this turmoil many displaced Moslems are fleeing into Europe. At the same time there is a strong spirit of nationalism arising north of what was once the frontier between the Roman Empire, and the Barbarians of Northern Europe.

The signs are that strong independent national governments will arise in Holland, Denmark, Germany and Poland. With this rising wave of nationalism, all Moslems will be expelled from Northern Europe, with most of these people fleeing to countries like England, France, Spain, and Italy, countries that are within the borders of the old Roman Empire.

While all this upheaval is going on in the West of Europe, in the East of Europe the Balkans will again erupt into open warfare. Then, when the smoke finally settles, the nations of the former Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria and Rumania shall emerge as one unified nation.

The Independent Northern European nations, partly because of mounting strong political pressure from the south, and partly because of their strong reliance on Russia for energy and military supplies, will form an alliance with Russia; thus effectively bringing to an end the European Common Market.

Also while all this upheaval is going on in Europe, things in the Middle East will not peaceful either. All the Bible has to say about this time of turmoil in the Middle East, is that there will always be wars and rumours of wars right up to the great and terrible day of the Lord. But it does also tell us that the Jewish temple shall be standing in Jerusalem during the last 10½ years.

Before the Jews can rebuild the temple in Jerusalem, the Jews will first have to take over the Temple Mount, then destroy and completely pull down and remove the Moslem Mosque, the Dome of the Rock. Only then will the Jews rebuild the temple.  It seems very unlikely that this would happen, without there first being another major war between the Moslems and the Jews, which will end with the Jews taking over the Temple Mount.

This rebuilding of the Jewish temple must happen, because Jesus Christ himself makes it very clear, that the Jewish temple will be standing during the last 10½ years.  I believe that it is this event that will trigger off a whole chain of foretold events that will happen before the return of Jesus Christ.

This rebuilding of the Jewish temple will cause such great anger and outrage among the people and the leaders of many European and Middle Eastern Nations, that ten kings (ten world leaders) from what was once the Roman Empire, will come together to choose one man to rule over their kingdoms and armed forces for the next seven years.

Coming world events, as prophesied in the Holy Bible:

alt

The Bible refers to both this end time World Empire, and the man chosen to rule over this empire, as the beast.  For easier reading (in this chapter), I will only refer to the empire's leader as the beast.  The beast will make a 7 year covenant with ten kings, giving the beast their power and authority for the express purpose of raising an army to completely eliminate the Jewish problem for all time and to reclaim the temple site for the Moslems.

The beast will sit on Satan's throne, which according to Revelation 2:12 is in Pergamos.  Pergamos is within the borders of modern day Turkey and is now called Bergama. Although the beast first sets up his capital in Pergamos, one of his first acts as emperor will be to order the rebuilding of Babylon. For this purpose many petty criminals, pimps, homosexuals, Jews and Christians from throughout the empire will be deported as slave labourers to Babylon.

Before 3½ years of the 7 year covenant have been completed, the beast will remove the kings of Turkey, Syria and Egypt, giving the beast greater control over the eastern part of the empire.

alt

Prior to the beast takeover of Egypt; the beast will mass his forces on Israel's northern border.  His army will invade northern Israel, completely routing the Israeli army.

alt

Then the forces of the beast will move quickly down the coast of Israel, by passing Judea and invading Egypt. This will upset the western kings of the empire, whose warships are stationed at Cyprus.  Their ships will put to sea, threatening to cut off the army of the beast in Egypt.

alt

His army will pull out of Egypt and turn on Judea, invading it and capturing Jerusalem.  Then 3½ years into the 7 year covenant, his forces will place in the temple the abomination that causes desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet.

Jesus Christ warns us, that when we see the abomination that causes desolation standing in the temple, we should flee from Jerusalem. Why? Because for the next 3½ years the forces of the beast will occupy Judea, Jerusalem and the Jewish temple.  This will be a time of great distress for the Jews in Judea. (This period of 3½ years is often called The Great Tribulation.)

This will also be a time of great distress for both Jews and Christians throughout the empire.  Because at this time, the beast will pass a law, requiring everyone to receive a mark on their foreheads or on their right hand (possibly on the wrist).  No one will be able to buy or sell without this mark. Throughout the empire cash will be done away with and this mark will replace the use of credit cards. To receive the mark, the people will be expected to bow down and worship the beast. As this mark is an abomination to God, the people of the empire will have to choose. Will they worship the beast by receiving the mark, or will they refuse to receive the mark, and worship God, by putting their trust in God to supply all their needs?

The Bible makes it clear, that all those bow down and worship the beast and receive the mark will be eternally dammed.  For Christians and Jews alike this will be a faith testing time.  A time when many Christians will leave the Church and many churches throughout the world will split between those who will receive the mark, and those who will not receive the mark.  But then those churches that will not receive the mark will begin to spread and grow, despite the beast attempts to destroy these churches.

At the end of the 7 year covenant, instead of giving up his rule over the empire, the beast will hold on to his power and authority over the eastern part of the empire.  So the rulers of the world (the seven western kings) will gather together to decide how they will remove the beast from his position of power. Although with the ending of the seven-year covenant, the time of great tribulation comes to an end. Christians and Jews, as they have always done, will continue to suffer persecutions and tribulations to the end.

The order of events in Judea and Jerusalem from the ending of the covenant, to the sealing of the 144,000.

With the ending of the seven-year covenant, we will also see the arrival in Jerusalem of the two witnesses.

Revelation 11:5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if any man desires to hurt them, he must be killed in this manner.

These two, along with the remnant of the Jews will rise up against the forces of the beast and drive them out of Jerusalem and Judea. However the local Moslems will retain control of the Temple Mount for the next two years. Then the armies of Northern Europe and Russia will unite with the army of the beast and again invade Judea. This vast army will cover the hills of Judea and there God will destroy them. Following this great victory, the Children of Israel will reclaim most of the land they occupied at the height of King Solomon’s reign, and many Children of Israel and Children of Judah will return to Israel and Judea.

From the end of the 7 year covenant, for 3½ years, the two witnesses will stop the rain and call down all kinds of plagues upon the earth. For the first two years (The same two years that the Moslems retain control of the Temple Mount) these plagues will fall on all mankind, then for the next 1½ years, they will only fall upon the lands of the wicked, and upon those who worship the beast and have received the mark of the beast.

If we were to look back at the plagues that Moses called down upon the Egyptians, we would see that the first plagues fell upon both Egyptians and the Israelites alike.  But then God made a difference between the Egyptians and the Israelites, so that the later plagues only fell upon the Egyptians and their land, and not upon the Israelites or their land (Exodus chapters 8 to 11).

This is a type picture of how it will be in the last days. The first plagues will fall upon all mankind, but then God will make a difference between those who have received the mark of the beast and those who have received the seal of God on their foreheads. What is this seal of God?  It is the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, promised to all who repent and are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins (Acts 2:38; Eph 1:13 & 4:30).

Before the two witnesses begin to call down these later plagues, they first call all the Children of Judah and the Children of Israel in Jerusalem and Judea together to preach to them, salvation in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. When they stop preaching, 144,000 Children of Israel and Children of Judah, who have neither received the mark of the beast nor bowed down and worshiped him, will receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. These 144,000 will repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of their sins; thus they will receive the promised gift of the Holy Spirit and be marked in Christ with the seal of the Holy Spirit (the seal of God).

World events from the ending of the covenant to the sealing of the 144,000.

alt

With the end of the 7 year covenant the beast, instead of giving up his rule over the empire, will hold on to his power and authority over the eastern part of the empire. With most the of forces of the beast withdrawing from Judea, to meet the possible threat of an attack by the Southern European Alliance, the remnant of the Jews rise up against the beast and take control of Judea declaring it an independent nation.

Also, shortly after the ending of the 7 year covenant the beast forms an alliance with Russia and the Northern Independent Nations of Europe. Almost 2 years later, the armies of this alliance will invade Judea from the north and the south. These, the armies of the world, will come together in the mountains of Judea, for an all out assault on Jerusalem. But God will intervene and destroy the armies of the world in the mountains of Judea. In the book of Ezekiel chapters 38 & 39 it says that this vast army will be lead by Gog of Magog.

You can find out more about this war and the destruction of the armies of the world in the book of Ezekiel or by reading my book "The Russian Invasion of Israel."

After this great victory, in one day 144,000; 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes of Israel repent and are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and God pours out his Spirit upon them. Then, with only 1½ years remaining until the return of Jesus Christ, the kingdom of the beast will be plunged into darkness, as the sun and the moon are darkened and the stars fall from the sky.

It is God’s perfect will that repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, come before the receiving of the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the deliverance from sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Joel 2:28 “And it shall come to pass afterwards that I will pour my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. 29 And also upon the bondservants both men and women I will pour out my Spirit in those days. 30 And I will show wonders in the sky and in the earth: Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD.”

Joel 3:14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. 15 The sun and moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.

The last year-and-a-half, the time when God out pours great wrath upon the wicked of the world.

Two years after the ending of the beast occupation of Judea, and the ending of the great tribulation, the kingdom of the beast will be plunged into darkness. Although Christians all over the world continue to suffer trials and tribulations, as they have always suffered, and will continue to suffer till the End of Days, compared to the people of the world, the Christians will be having a good time.

Because for the next year-and-a-half; the people of the world will suffer the great wrath of God. There will be plagues of locusts with stings like scorpions, famine, no clean drinking water, wars, painful sores that will not heal and more.  All these plagues will come upon those who worship the beast and those who receive the mark of the beast, while the Christians will be protected from these plagues and provided for by God.

Towards the end of this time, the armies of the beast will again invade Israel, passing down the coast of Israel to invade both Egypt and Libya.  Having soundly defeated their enemies, the armies of the beast will again turn on Judea, and capturing Jerusalem; thus bringing to an end the three-and-a-half-year period of Jewish self-rule.

alt

Once in Jerusalem, three-and-a-half days before the return of Jesus Christ, the beast will kill the two witnesses and leave their bodies lying on the street.  But then the beast will hear news from the north and the east, telling him of the armies of the world coming against him.  The beast goes out to meet them at the place called Armageddon.  There by the power of God, both the armies of the world and the army of the beast are destroyed and the beast is captured and thrown into the lake of fire.

Also, on this day, there is a great earthquake that destroys every city in the world, followed by a great hailstorm, with stones about 40 KGs in weight.  Then we will see Jesus Christ coming in the cloud of God’s Glory.

Matthew24:30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in the sky: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the cloud of the sky with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.”

Jesus Christ will come with his angels in the cloud and fire of God’s Glory.  At the sound of the last trumpet, the dead in Christ shall be raised first, and together with we who are in Christ and still alive at the coming of the Lord, will be caught up to meet with Jesus in the cloud of God’s Glory.  While the wicked are destroyed by the fire of God’s Glory. For those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer, this will be a great day; a day that will end with them dancing for joy.  But for the rest of mankind, all those who have rejected Jesus Christ, this will be a day of terror and they will end up as ash under the feet of the justified.  If you want to end this day dancing for joy, no matter how bad or good you may think you are, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Deliverer today, while it is not too late.

3. NOTE ON THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION.

Matthew 24:15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by the prophet Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand.)

In this verse Jesus Christ makes it clear, that it is his desire that all who read the writings of Daniel the prophet should understand what he writes concerning the placing of the ‘abomination of desolation’ in the holy place. In the book of Daniel, depending on what version you are reading, the abomination referred to as ‘the abomination of desolation,’ ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ or ‘the abomination that makes desolate.’

Abomination:

According to the Universal Dictionary, the word abomination means, 1. Something or someone that causes great revulsion or abhorrence. 2. An intense dislike or loathing for someone or something.

According to the New Bible Dictionary, published by Inter Varsity Press, there are four Hebrews words we translate into English as abomination. Of these the Hebrew word ‘siqqus’ is used to describe practices associated with idolatry. My own study of the usage of this word in the Bible confirms that this word ‘siqqus’ was nearly always used to describe idolatry and practices associated with idolatry.

Desolation:

According to the Universal Dictionary, the word desolate means, 1. Devoid of inhabitants; deserted: “streets which were usually so thronged now grown desolate” (Daniel Defoe). 2. Rendered unfit for habitation; laid waste; devastated. 3. Dreary; dismal; gloomy. 4. Without friends or hope; forlorn; lonely.

According to the Universal Dictionary, the word desolation means, 1. The act of rendering desolate. 2. The state of being desolate; ruin. 3. A wasteland. 4. Loneliness or misery; wretchedness.

Desolation can also refer to the removal of God’s people from Judea and Jerusalem, followed by the repopulating of the land with pagan Gentiles. This creates a spiritual desolation. The prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel all use the Hebrew word ‘somem’ to describe the destruction of cities and the scattering or removal of its inhabitants.

The abomination that causes desolation.

In Daniel 11:31 & 12:11, the Hebrew expression ‘siqqus somem’ is used. This is most commonly translated into English as ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ or as ‘the abomination that makes desolation.’

By comparing Biblical references, I have come to know that the Jews will rebuild the temple on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. After the rebuilding of the temple, three-and-a-half-years into the seven-year covenant, the forces of anti-christ will occupy Jerusalem and place an image of the anti-christ in the Holy of holies. Then the anti-christ himself will come and sit in the temple proclaiming himself to be God. This placing of image of the anti-christ in the temple is what God’s word calls ‘the abomination that causes desolation.’

4. WITH THE LORD, A DAY IS A THOUSAND YEARS.

Leviticus 23:3 Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, and a holy assembly. You shall do no work on it; it is the Sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.

Leviticus 25:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, 2 Speak to the children of Israel, and say unto them: ‘When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a Sabbath unto the LORD. 3 Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather in the fruit; 4 but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of rest unto the land, a Sabbath for the LORD. You shall neither sow your field nor prune your vineyard.

II Peter3:8 But, beloved, do not ignorant of this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

God is a Law abiding God.  God’s Law says that we must rest on the seventh day.  Then God’s Word tells us, a day to the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years are as a day.  So we can say, time, as we know it, is divided into seven days of a thousand years.  In keeping with the principles of God’s Law, the seventh day of a thousand years shall be a Sabbath to the Lord.

When the children of Israel received their instructions for the crossing of the river Jordan into the promised land (Joshua 3:3 - 6), they were told that the Ark of the Covenant with its accompanying priest and Levites, was to go on about 2,000 cubits ahead of the children of Israel.  This is possibly God's way of telling us that Jesus Christ, along with a small number of saints (possibly the 24 elders spoken of in Revelation 4:4) would ascend from the world of the dead, about 2,000 years before the rest of God's children, giving us a Church age of about 2,000 years.  At the end of the Church age, the rest of God's children would be raised from dead, then the saints will rule and reign with Jesus Christ on earth for a 1,000 years.

So these are the seven days of the Lord our God.  The first day begins with the creation of Adam.  From Adam to Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead, there are about 4,000 years, or to God, 4 days of 1,000 years each.  From the resurrection of Jesus Christ, to the resurrection of those who are Christ's, there will be approximately 2,000 years, or 2 days of 1,000 years each.  The last day, the seventh and a Sabbath to the Lord, will be the 1,000-year reign of Jesus Christ on earth (Rev 20:6).

According to this theory, because Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead in 32 A.D. we can expect the second coming of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of those who are in Christ, approximately 2,000 of our calendar years later in the year 2,032 A.D.  If we were to count lunar years, instead of calendar years, we would have 1,971 calendar years and 3 months from the resurrection of Jesus Christ till the resurrection of those who are in Christ, in approximately 2,003 A.D.

Note: Both the Hebrew calendar and the Lunar consist of 12 months of 30 days each, to make 360 days per year. Our modern day Western calendar consists of 12 months of between 28 & 31 days each, to make 365¼ day per year.

NOTE: It should be noted that the LORD told Joshua, that the Ark of the Covenant and the accompanying priests should go about 2,000 cubits before the rest of the people. The theory of the seven days of the Lord should not be taken as an exact period of 7,000 years, but a period of about 7,000-years. For example if we where to take time as it is laid out chronologically in the Bible, we would come up with a period of approximately 4,370-years from the day of creation to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Not 4,000 years. Then if we add to that another 2,000 years before the return of Jesus Christ, we will have arrived at about 6,370 years after creation before we enter into the 1,000 year reign of Jesus Christ.

It is not my intention to either prove or disprove the theory of 7 days of 1,000-years.  What I have done in the second half of this book, is to look at some of the Bible prophecies that give us insight to the things that will happen in the last days.  I have started by looking at some of the dreams and visions recorded in the book of Daniel.  Then I have looked at other writings in the Bible that either confirm or add to what is revealed to us through Daniel.

By doing this, we can build up a very good picture of what will happen in the last ten-and-a-half-years, before that day when the dead in Christ are all resurrected.  I am not saying when Christ will return. What I am saying is, regardless whether Jesus Christ returns in 10, 100 or in a 1,000-years time from now, this is what will happen during the last ten-and-a-half-years before the Lord returns.

My own personal thoughts are that the Lord will return, sometime between 2,030 and 2,050 A.D.  He could return a little earlier, or He could return much later.  For now this is something that only God the Father knows.  But before that day the true prophets of God will know. For  Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he reveals his secret unto his servants the prophets  (Amos 3:7).

I can only write what the Lord my God has revealed to me.  For now the Lord has shown me things that must happen, as through smoked glass. For now that is enough for us to know, but as the time draws closer, God is and will show me more clearly, that I may show you more clearly. For God will do nothing without first revealing His secret to His servants the prophets.

For example, when I first published this book in 2000, I had no idea of when Gog, of the land of Magog (Russia), and His Allies would invade Israel. However in March 2,008 God revealed to me the timing of the invasion, plus a little more insight into the fall and destruction of Babylon, and the coming return of both the children of Israel and the children of Judah together to the Promised Land. Therefore early 2009 I published the book, “The Russian Invasion of Israel.” In which you will find a detailed account of the coming invasion and the fall of Babylon. Then in 2010 I published the book, “The Return of the Children of Judah and the Children of Israel.”

5. NOTE ON PROPHECIES WITH A BREACH IN THEM.

Many prophecies have what I call a breach in the prophecy. When you read a prophecy with a breach in it, to us it starts off like reading a history book. We can compare the first part of the prophecy with history and say “yes it happened just as the prophecy said it would happen.” But then the rest of the prophecy, no matter how hard we try to make it fit with history, just won’t fit. However as we compare the later part of the prophecy with other prophecies, we begin to see and understand, that although the first part of the prophecy is now history, the second part is still in the future.

All of the prophecies that include events from both Jesus Christ First Coming and Second Coming have a breach in them. It looks as if someone has written all of these prophecies down on a chart, then torn the chart in two. How all these prophecies have an ever-increasing, unannounced breach between the First and Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

In most of these prophecies there is little or nothing included within the prophecy its self to indicate a breach. Therefore it is often only by comparing the prophecy with historical events and other prophecies that we can become aware of a breach in the prophecy.

One notable acceptation is the prophecy of the seventy weeks found in Daniel chapter 9, which is explained fully in the next chapter. Just briefly for now, this prophecy has what I call a gap period of 38 years written into the prophecy, coming between the sixty-ninth week and the seventh week. The last event prophesied to happen during this gap period was the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. After this destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, the gap period comes to an end and we enter into the unannounced breach period of this prophecy, which will continue until we enter the 70th week of the prophecy.

People often ask, why does God make it so hard for us to understand biblical prophecies?

Answer: Because it is given to us the children of God to know the mysteries of the kingdom, but the understanding is not given to the people of the world (Mathew 13:10 – 13).

If you want to know the mysteries of the kingdom, first you need to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Deliverer, be born again into the kingdom of God, baptized into Christ and baptized with the Holy Spirit, for it is he (the Holy Spirit) who will guide you into all truth. You need to pray (talk to God) daily, read the Bible daily, meet regularly with small groups of Christians to study God’s word, and meet regularly with God’s people on the Lord’s Day to worship God.

As a servant of Jesus Christ, and as teacher and prophet of God, guided by the Holy Spirit I have written this book to help bring you understanding of things that must shortly come to pass. But unless you hunger and thirst for righteousness, and diligently seek understanding from God’s word, you will not gain any understanding of the mysteries of the kingdom. For those who have been born again into the kingdom of God, it is not meant to be difficult for you to understand the mysteries of the kingdom. However, the amount of understanding you gain and retain, very much depends on how much you hunger and thirst for righteousness. Why not get together with a small group of Christian friends to regularly study God’s word?

Matthew5:6 Blessed are they who do hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.

This includes being filled with an understanding of the mysteries of the kingdom.

6. THE SEVENTY "WEEKS" OF DANIEL (Daniel 9:24 - 27).

Daniel 9: 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon your people and upon your holy city, to finish the rebellion, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

It is generally accepted in most Christian churches that the “seventy weeks’ mentioned here, is a period of seventy weeks of seven years.  70 X 7 years = 490 years.  Because I have studied and searched the Scriptures to see if this is so, I can say, yes the seventy weeks mention in the vision and prophecy do cover a period of 490 years. However as we look more closely at this vision and prophecy, comparing it with history and other visions and prophecies, we will discover that it also includes both a gap period of 38 years and a breach period of nearly 2,000 years and still increasing.

Daniel 9: 25 Know therefore and understand, from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince there shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome  times.

This verse tell us, from the time the command to restore and build Jerusalem is given, until the coming of the Messiah the Prince (who is Jesus Christ the King of the Jews), there will be 7 weeks of seven years, plus 62 weeks of seven years.  In other words, there will be 483 years from the command to restore Jerusalem, until the coming of Jesus Christ.

alt

   7 X 7 =   49 years

          62 X 7 = 434 years

            49 + 434 = 483 years

The following is fact to the best of my knowledge, and widely agreed on in Christian circles.  In 538 B.C., king Cyrus decrees that the temple in Jerusalem should be rebuilt.  But while work on the temple began at this time, it was not until 445 B.C., that king Artaxerxes decreed that Jerusalem and its walls should be rebuilt.  476 of our calendar years later or 483 lunar years later, to the day, Jesus Christ rode into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday 32 A.D.

On this day, there were many reasons why the crowds welcomed Jesus Christ as the King of the Jews, the Messiah.  Not just because Jesus had done mighty works among them, or because he was the Son of David, but also because Jesus Christ fulfilled what the prophets had said about the coming Messiah, including the writings of Daniel, which prophesied that the Messiah would come on this day.  (Ezra 1:2; Nehemiah 2:7 - 8; Luke 19:37 - 38; Mark 11:8 - 10; & Zechariah 9:9)

Matthew 21:4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: 5 “Tell the daughter of Zion, look and see, your King is coming to you, humble and sitting upon a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.

The first seven weeks was followed by the sixty-two weeks, and at the end of the sixty-two weeks Jesus Christ the Messiah comes riding upon a donkey. The Messiah having come, we then enter into the gap period.

Daniel 9:26 Then after the sixty two weeks Messiah shall be killed, but not for himself: and the people of the prince who is to come, shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.

There are seven events prophesied in verses 26 & 27 of Daniel chapter 9. The first two happened during the gap period. The first happening just after we entered the gap period, the second happening 38 years later, just before we stepped out of the gap period and into the breach period. The third also started just before we stepped into the breach and will continue over the breach period and into the last 10½ years. The other four events will happen during the last 10½ years.

Firstly:

The “Messiah shall be killed, but not for Himself.” This happened a few days after Jesus Christ arrived in Jerusalem, when Jesus Christ was killed upon the cross, not for himself, but for sinners.

alt

Jesus said of his sacrifice on the cross;

Matthew 26:28 “For this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured forth for many for the remission of sins.”

When we turn from our sin to righteousness, accepting that Jesus Christ poured forth His blood for the remission (the casting away) of our sins, we lay hold of what Jesus Christ achieved on the cross.  Just some of what Jesus achieved on the cross for us is mentioned in verse 24 of Daniel chapter 9.

1:  He finished my rebellion.

God no longer sees me as a transgressor or a rebel.

2:  He made an end to my sins.

God can no longer count my sins against me, because He has cast them all away.

3:  He brought me everlasting righteousness.

I am now clothed in the everlasting righteousness of Jesus Christ.

It was to achieve all this and more that Jesus Christ died on the cross for all mankind.  Jesus achieved all he went to the cross achieve.  That is why Jesus, with his dying breath declared, “It is finished.” (John 19:30)

However for the Jews, who are living in rebellion against God, and have rejected the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ upon the cross for their sins; these things will not be fulfilled until approximately two years after the great tribulation. Only then will the Jews repent of their rebellion against God and accept Jesus Christ has their Lord and Deliverer.

Secondly:

The people of the prince who is to come, shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.” That is, they, the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy Jerusalem and the temple. Here we are talking about what happen 38 years after Jesus Christ the Messiah the Prince had already come. Jesus Christ came on the last day of the 69th week in 32 A.D., but 38 years later, in 70 A.D. the people of another prince, who is still to come, destroyed Jerusalem and the temple.

Jesus Christ the Messiah came in 32 A.D. Then in 70 A.D., 38 years later, the soldiers of the empire, who are the people, of the prince who is to come came and destroy the city and the sanctuary.”

This part of the prophecy has also already been fulfilled, but the prince of the people who destroyed Jerusalem and the temple, has still not come. Therefore, we are still looking for a prince who is to come. So between the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, by the people of the coming prince, and the arrival of that coming prince, we have this breach period of 2,000 years and still increasing.

Daniel 9:26 Then after the sixty two weeks Messiah shall be killed, but not for himself: and the people of the prince who is to come, shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and their end shall come as a flood, (The breach in this prophecy)

and unto the end of the war desolations are decreed.                                                                  (Words in itilics added)

The end of it shall come as a flood. In 70 A.D., for Jerusalem the end came suddenly like a flood. First there was that steady build up of Roman troops, then like flood waters bursting through a dam, the Roman troops burst through the walls of Jerusalem, flooded into the city and destroyed everything. But that didn’t end the war, for the Jews are still in rebellion against God and his Son Jesus Christ, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

Daniel 9: 27 Then he (the prince who is to come) shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the middle of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease, and along with the abominations shall be the one he who make it desolate, even until the completion of that which is determined has been be poured upon the desolate.                           (Words in italics added.)

The temple was destroyed in 70 A.D., bringing to an end the daily sacrifice and offerings. As far as the Jews are concerned, the daily sacrifices and offerings can be made nowhere else but in the grounds of the temple. Therefore, before the coming prince can bring an end to sacrifice and offering the temple in Jerusalem must first be rebuilt and the daily sacrifices and offerings recommenced. According to the teachings of Jesus Christ one of the signs the last generation will see before his return, is the appearance of the abomination of desolation (spoken of by the prophet Daniel) standing in the Holy Place (Matthew 24:15). As the Holy Place is within the temple, for this prophecy of Jesus to be fulfilled, first the temple needs to be rebuilt.

Whenever you make a breach in something, the two sides will always fit like two pieces of a jigsaw. It does not matter how far apart in time or distance the two parts become, they will always match like two pieces of jigsaw. The last thing mentioned in this prophecy, to happen before the breach, is the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple. Jesus Christ in Matthew 24:2 says of the temple not one stone shall be left upon another. Therefore before we come out of this breach, we can again expect Jerusalem to be destroyed and anything standing on the temple site destroyed and pulled down, so not one stone shall be left upon another.

The first thing mention in this prophecy, to happen after the breach, is that the prince of the people who is to come shall confirm a covenant with many for one week. Then in the middle of the week he shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. Given that there is currently a Moslem Mosque standing on the temple sight, it would appear that in a time yet to come, before we step out of the breach, Jerusalem will again suffer massive destruction and during that time of destruction the Moslem Mosque will also be destroyed, with not one stone being left upon another. Following this destruction of the Mosque, the Jews will commence rebuilding their temple, and then the prince who is to come will make a seven-year covenant with many.

This breach of 2,000 years or more; is common to most of the dreams and visions recorded in the book of Daniel, and is also found in number of the other prophecies about Jesus Christ, including Zechariah 9:9 – 10; and Isaiah 61:1 – 2.

Thirdly:

And till the end of the war desolations are decreed.” (Daniel 9:26).  Who is this war between?  Yes there is a war between the World Empire and the Jews, both in 70 A.D. and in a time yet to come.  But there is also a war going on between God’s people (the Jews) and God, for the Jews are in rebellion against God.

In the gospel of Matthew 21:33 to 22:14, Jesus Christ tell us two parables about this war.  In the first, the parable of the Wicked Vinedressers (the vinedresssers, being a type picture of the chief priest and the Pharisees, and the vineyard a type picture of the kingdom of God) tells us that the leaders of Israel have beaten and killed God’s servants, and in the end, they even killed God’s own Son.

In the second parable, again they beat and killed God’s servants.  For this reason God sends an army to destroy those murderers and their city. (Matthew 22:7)

Also in Luke 21:20 – 22, Jesus tells of this army God sends against the Jews.

Luke 21:20 “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those who are in the midst of Jerusalem depart from her, and let not those who are in the country enter into her. 22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.”

God’s people the Jews are at war against God.  They beat and killed God’s servants; they even killed his only begotten Son Jesus Christ.  God gave them time to repent, (38 years from the day they crucified Jesus, till the destruction of Jerusalem) but they would not repent of their rebellion against God and their rejection of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 22:7 “But when the king heard of it, he was enraged: and he sent forth his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.”

This war between God and the Jews will continue until the Jews turn from their rebellion against God and accept Jesus Christ, God’s own Son as their Lord and Deliverer. “And till the end of the war desolations are decreed.”

It is not that God wants to destroy the Jews; it is because he wants to bring them to repentance, so that he can save as many as possible from eternal damnation. Some people would say, “How could God be so cruel to his people?”  But considering how short this life is compared to eternity, it would be cruel of God not to do all he can to bring them to repentance, in order to save their eternal souls. Sometimes one has to be cruel to be kind.

Are you in rebellion against God? Is your life a mess, are things not going right for you? May be you need to repent of your rebellion against God and invite Jesus Christ to become Lord of your life. Then things will become much better for you.

Fourthly:

It says of the prince who is to come (also known as the anti-christ). “Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week” (Daniel 9:27). In Revelation 17:12 – 13: We are told that ten kings will give the anti-christ (the beast) their power and authority. The covenant that the anti-christ makes with these ten kings will be for seven years, which is the 70th week of the vision.

Fifthly:

“In the middle of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease” (Daniel 9:27).

In Daniel 11:31 we are given more understanding on how this coming prince brings an end to sacrifice and offering.

Daniel 11:31 “Armed forces shall stand on his behalf, they shall defile the sanctuary of strength, and then they shall take away the daily sacrifice, and place there the abomination that makes desolate.”

In a time yet to come, in the middle of the anti-christ’s seven year covenant with the ten kings, the troops of the World Empire will again capture Jerusalem.  But this time, instead of destroying the temple, like they did in 70 A.D., they shall defile the temple. Then they shall take away the daily sacrifices and place in the temple an image of the anti-christ. This image is the abomination of desolation.

Sixthly:

“And along with the abominations shall be the one he who make it desolate” (Daniel 9:27).

Along with the abominations.”  Meaning, along with the abominations that defile the temple will come the one (the anti-christ) who makes desolate (who brings destruction).

So, no sooner have the troops of the World Empire, defiled the temple and placed the image of the anti-christ in the temple, the anti-christ himself comes to Jerusalem.  He enters the temple, sits in front of his image, and demands that the Jews worship him as God.  In this way he will reveal himself as the anti-christ. The man of sin mention in Thessalonians 2:3 – 4.

Seventhly:

Even until the completion of that which is determined has been poured upon the desolate” (Daniel 9:27).

This prophecy is about the Jews and their city Jerusalem.  It is about their rebellion against God and of how God uses the anti-christ to pour out destruction and desolation upon Jerusalem and the other cities of Judea, until the completion of the punishment that God has determined for Jerusalem and the Jews has been poured out upon the desolate.

7. THERE IS NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN.

There is a pattern to life and history and things go around in circles. That which has happened before will happen again, there is nothing new under the sun.  Because of this never ending pattern to life, many Bible prophecies draw on past events to explain future events.

Example:

Matthew 24 37 “But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.”

Before the coming of Jesus Christ, the Jews of 2,000 years ago, in reading prophecies about the coming of the Messiah (Jesus Christ), the Jews failed to understand that the Messiah was coming twice.  But in hindsight, we can look at these same prophecies, and not only see that Jesus Christ is coming again, we can also see a breach in the prophecies of about 2,000 years or more. The best known of these prophecies with a breach in it is found in Isaiah chapter 61 and read by Jesus in Luke chapter 4.

Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news of the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and the recovery of sight to the blind, to send away ones having been oppressed with deliverance, 19 to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 Then he closed the book, and he gave back to the minister and sat down. And the eyes of all who that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, “Today is this scripture fulfilled in your hearing.”

As we look at what Jesus read from Isaiah, we can say:  “Yes!  Jesus Christ fulfilled all of this during His first coming.”  But what Jesus read was only a small part of a much larger prophecy, about the coming Messiah (Jesus Christ).  For in Isaiah 61:2b – 7, the prophecy continues without a break, proclaiming things that will be fulfilled by Jesus during his second coming.  So Instead of Just reading the first one-and-a-half verses of this prophecy, let us read the first 4 verses.

Isaiah 61:1 “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good tidings to the humble; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2 To preach the acceptable year of the LORD, (The breach is this prophecy) and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn, 3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.” 4 And they shall rebuild the old ruins, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations.                                                                                              (Words in italics added.)

In verse 2 of this prophecy, it is stated that two things will be preached.

Firstly;

The acceptable year of the Lord.”  This Jesus Christ declared fulfilled during His first coming.

Secondly;

“The day of vengeance of our God.”  This will Jesus Christ will not declare fulfilled until his Second Coming.

Therefore in this prophecy, as well as being able to see that Jesus Christ must come again, to fulfil the second part of this prophecy.  We can also see that there is an unannounced breach in the prophecy of over 2,000 years between these two proclamations.  Later on in verse 4 of this prophecy, one of the things spoken of that will be fulfilled during the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, is the rebuilding of Jerusalem.

Isaiah 61:4 And they shall rebuild the old ruins, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations.

You could look at this verse and say it has already been fulfilled, not once, but twice.  After Isaiah wrote this prophecy, the cities of Judea were destroyed by the Babylonians, and later rebuilt before the first coming of Jesus Christ.  Then again after the first coming of Jesus, the armies of Rome destroyed the cities of Judea, and again they were rebuilt.

Yes!  But neither of these reconstructions of the cities of Judea took place during the time of the Lord’s coming.  So before the Lord Jesus Christ returns, the cites of Judea will again have to be destroyed, so that this prophecy can be fulfilled in full this time, by the cities being rebuilt during the time of his coming.

What of the ‘abomination of desolation’, spoken of by the prophet Daniel? Again we can look at back in history and say that this has already happened.  Both during the time of Greek rule and the time of Roman rule, idols of pagan gods were placed in the temple.  But in order for the prophecies about the ‘abomination of desolation’, to be completely fulfilled, this has to happen in the middle of the last week of seven years, spoken of in Daniel chapter 9.

According to Jesus Christ, the generation that sees the ‘abomination of desolation’, (Matthew 24:15) followed by the great tribulation (verse 21) and the darkening of the sun and the moon, immediately after the tribulation of those days (verse 29), will not pass away before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ (verse 34).

These things have all happened before and they will happen again.  But in order to fulfil the prophecies in full, they must all happen in the right order and within the lifetime of one generation.

8. THE LAST DAY.

(Suggested reading, Daniel 11:25 – 12:13 & John 6:35 – 40)

alt

From the time of the prophet Daniel, until the time of Jesus Christ resurrection, the Old Testament saints clearly believed that they would be resurrected at the Last Day; also known as the resurrection at the End of Days.  This truth comes through loud and clear in Jesus Christ’s conversation with Martha, after her Brother Lazarus’ death

John 11:23 Jesus said unto her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

Martha and the Old Testament saints had learnt about the resurrection at the Last Day through the writings of Daniel.

In Daniel chapter 11, is written the account of the war between the king of the North and the king of the South.  Verse 2 to verse 28, of this prophecy has already been fulfilled (during the time of the Ptolemies and the Seleucids) and is now history.  Between verses 28 and 29, there is a breach of over 2,000 years.  While verses 29 to 45 is prophecy, which is still to be fulfilled.  Then Daniel chapter 12, gives us another look at this time of unfulfilled prophecy and on till the End of Days.

Daniel chapter 11, verse 31 & 36 has this to say about the king of the North.

Daniel 11:31 “Armed forces shall stand on his behalf, they shall defile the sanctuary of strength, and then they shall take away the daily sacrifice, and place there the abomination that makes desolate.”

Daniel 11:36 “Then the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished: for what is determined shall be done.”

The king of the North (the anti-christ) is God’s instrument of wrath against the Jews, in order to bring them to repentance and the acceptance of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer.  For God is determined that he shall save his people, as he promised.  The king of the North’s invasion and occupation of Israel brings great trouble upon the Jews, known as the great tribulation.  Daniel chapter 12, tells us of the deliverance God brings to his people from that time of trouble.

Daniel 12:1 “At that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands for the sons of your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone that shall found written in the book. 2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt.”

In Daniel 12:1, Daniel writes:

There shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time.”

In Matthew 24:21 – 22, Jesus Christ says of this time:

Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 Unless except those days should be shortened, there no flesh shall be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

There will be a time of great tribulation (a time of trouble).  But at that time everyone, whose name is found written in the Book of Life, will be delivered.  This deliverance of everyone whose name is found written in the Book of Life will not only include the living, but also the saints who have died and whose bodies sleep in the dust of the earth.  They will awake to everlasting life.  In other words, they will be raised from the dead.

Daniel having been told of this resurrection day, of all those whose names are written in the book of life, is then (at the end of chapter 12) told that his own resurrection will be at the end of a given number of days, counting from the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up.

Daniel12:11 “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12 Blessed is he who waits, and comes to the one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days.”

When we compare Daniel 11:31 with Daniel 9:27, we see that the king of the North first confirms a seven-year covenant with many.  Then in the middle of that seven-year covenant, he puts an end to the sacrifice and offerings, and sets up the ‘abomination that causes desolation’.

Daniel 9:27a Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; and in the middle of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and offering to cease - - - - -

From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished, in the middle of the seven-year covenant, there will be 1,290 days until the end of the covenant.  But the saints will have to wait a further 1,335 days until they are blessed.  1,290 + 1,335 = 2,625 days.  Or in lunar years: seven-years, three-months, and five-days.

Having been told of this period of 2,625 days.  Daniel is then told,

Daniel 12:13 “But you, go your way till the end; for you shall rest, and will arise to your inheritance at the end of the days.”

This same verse paraphrased:

“But you Daniel, go and live your life till its end.  Your body will die and be laid to rest in the dust of the earth.  And you will be raised from the dead to receive your inheritance at the End of the Days.”

If we take it, that Daniel is included among those who have their names written in the Book of Life.  Then everyone whose name is written in the Book of Life will also be raised from the dead at the End of Days.

Just as the saints from the time of Daniel to Jesus Christ believed that they would be resurrected to everlasting life at the End of Days (the Last Day). Jesus Christ also taught all who came to him, will be raised up at the Last Day (the End of Days).

So according to the writings of Daniel, his people (the children of Israel), everyone whose name is written in the Book, will be resurrected at the Last Day.  And according to the teachings of Jesus Christ, everyone who sees the Son and believes in him (that is all born again Christians) will also be resurrected at the Last Day.

From the date that the king of the North makes a seven-year covenant with many, there will be 1,230 days until he reveals himself as the anti-christ, by setting up the “abomination that causes desolation” in the Holy place (2 Thessalonians 2:3).  Then there will be 1,290 days until the end of the covenant, followed by another 1,335 days till the resurrection at the End of Days.  Therefore, from the beginning of the seven-year covenant until the End of Days, there shall be 3,855 days, a period of 10 years and 8 months.

However according to Jesus Christ, this time will be cut short for the sake of the elect (Matthew 24:22).  When we compare the writings of Daniel, to the book of Revelation we discover that all three periods of time have been rounded off to 1,260 days each, reducing the overall period time from 10 years and 8 months, to 10 years and six months.

Note on the beast and the anti-christ.

In the book of Daniel, the Bible uses the term beast to refer to world empires and those who rule over world empires.  Any world empire is a beast, and any ruler who is the head of any such empire is also called a beast.

The beast that rises up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, is both the ancient Roman Empire and the end time World Empire, which rises up out of what was once the Roman Empire. (Revelation 13:13)

The anti-christ is the man who rules over this end time World Empire.  He is the head of the beast and the people of the empire are the body of the beast.

There is more than one beast.  For example, Daniel 7 tells us of three other beasts that come before the fourth beast, and God allows these other three beasts to continue, after the destruction of the fourth beast.

9. NEBUCHADNEZZAR'S DREAM OF A LARGE STATUE.

alt

The Dream.

Daniel 2:31 “You, O king, were watching; and saw a great image. This great image, whose countenance was excellent, stood before you; and the form of it was fearful.  32 This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass, 33 his legs of iron,

(The breach in this prophecy

his feet part of iron and part of clay. 34 You watched until a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image upon his feet of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold was broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

The Interpretation.

Daniel 2:36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation of the dream before the king. 37 You, O king, are a king of kings; for the God of the sky has given you a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. 38 And wherever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the birds of the sky, he has given them into your hand, and has made you ruler over them all. You are this head of gold. 39 And after you shall rise up another kingdom inferior to you, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall rule over all the earth. 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaks into pieces and subdues all; and as iron that breaks all these, it shall break in pieces and bruise all.

(The breach in this prophecy)

41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potters' clay, and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as you saw the iron mixed with clay, 42 and the toes of the feet partly of iron, and partly of clay, so shall the kingdom be partly strong, and partly fragile. 43 And where you saw iron mixed with clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings shall the God from the sky set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45 Forasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it break in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God has made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation is sure.

King Nebuchadnezzar in his dream is shown by God that starting with the kingdom of Babylon there will be four great world empires. The head of gold represents the kingdom of Babylon.  Next, the chest and arms of silver represent the kingdom of the Medes and Persians. The two arms represent the two kingdoms that powered this world empire.  Then came the Greek Empire, which is represented by the belly and thighs of brass. This is the area of man that contains the reproductive organs of man, and it is the Greek culture that has reproduced itself more than any other culture throughout the world.  The Roman Empire came next and is represented by the legs of iron.  There are two legs, one representing the West Roman Empire, with its capital in Rome and the other representing the East Roman Empire with its capital in Constantinople.

alt

With division of the Roman Empire, we enter into the breach in this prophecy.

After Constantine moved the capital to Constantinople in 325 A.D. the Roman Empire in the east continued as a strong military and economic power, while the power of Rome in the west declined and for a time was overrun and dominated by the Barbarians. However by 550 A.D. the former West Roman Empire’s territories of Italy, North Africa and Southern Spain were again part of the Roman Empire, and the Roman Empire was ruled over from Constantinople by Emperor Justinian. The Roman Empire continued as a strong military, economic power until Constantinople fell to Mehmel, the king of the Ottomans in 1453, who claimed the title of Caesar of Rome. By 1516 the Ottomans had pushed south to rule over the all the lands of the Old Testament, and they continued to do so until the end of the 1st World War in 1918.

In the world today there are those trying to bring the empire back together by means of democracy and multiculturalism to mingle themselves with the seed of men; but they will not cleave one to another, just as iron does not mix with clay.

In the last days, ten kings, (five from what was the West Roman Empire and five from what was the East Roman Empire) will once again try to unite these nations and bring the World Empire back into being.  This empire, like the Roman Empire of old, will extend from England to Iraq. For a brief time they will succeed, then this empire will be destroyed by the power of God.  Jesus Christ, the Rock, will strike and destroy all the kingdoms of this world and then his kingdom will rise on the earth, a kingdom that will know no end.

10. DANIEL'S VISION OF A RAM AND A GOAT.

Daniel 8:1 In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, I Daniel, after that which appeared to me the first time. 2 And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I in a vision, I saw I was by the river of Ulai. 3 Then I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and, beheld, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. 4 I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.

In the interpretation, given in Daniel  8:20, we are told

The ram which you saw, having two horns, they are the kings of Media and Persia.

In verse 3, we are told that the higher, or the larger of these two horns, came up last.  This is because it was the kingdom of Media that came to power first.  Then after the two kingdoms Media and Persia came together to form an empire, it was the Persian kingdom that quickly became the larger and more powerful of the two kingdoms.

Daniel 8:5 As I was considering, I saw a male goat come from the west above the face of the whole earth, touching not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. 6 Then he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power. 7 Then I saw him come close unto the ram, and moved with anger against ram, he struck the ram, and broke his two horns. Then there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him, and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand. 8 Therefore the male goat became very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken off; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of the sky.

In the interpretation we are told,

Daniel 8:21 And the hairy goat is the king of Greece: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. 22 As for the broken horn, four stood up in his place; four kingdoms shall rise up out of that nation, but not in his power.

The goat, we are told represents the Greek Empire.  To begin with, this empire has only one prominent horn.  This horn represents Alexander the Great.  Alexander’s Greek Empire, rose in the west, and quickly conquered all the kingdoms of the (then known) world.

I saw a male goat come from the west above the face of the whole earth, touching not the ground.” (V 5)

Then Alexander died at the height of his power.

When he was strong, the great horn was broken off.” (V 8)

And Alexander’s kingdom was divided between four kings, represented by the four notable horns.

“And in its place came up four notable ones toward the four winds of the sky.” (V 8)

Verses 1 – 8 of this prophecy have already been fulfilled and is now history.  The breach in this prophecy begins after the division of Alexander’s empire into four kingdoms.  Today Greece, Turkey, Syria and Egypt, more or less cover the territories of these four kingdoms.

Verses 9 – 14 is prophecy that is yet to be fulfilled.

In 323 B.C. Alexander died and his empire was divided between four of his generals.  In a time still to come, from out of these four kingdoms will arise another king, who will exalt “himself as high as the Prince of host.” (Verse 11)  This king is the anti-christ.

When we compare this vision, with the dream of the large statue, we know that the end time World Empire will be made up of ten kingdoms.  Five from what was once the West Roman Empire, and five from what was once the East Roman Empire.  Four of the kingdoms that will come from what was once the East Roman Empire, will be the same four kingdoms that came out of Alexander’s empire.  The Balkans (north of Greece) was not included in the four kingdoms that came out of Alexander’s empire, and is the fifth kingdom that will come out of what was the East Roman Empire.

The anti-christ will be offered Satan’s seat and the kingdoms of the world to rule over, (Rev 13:2) the very same throne, power and authority that Satan once offered to Jesus Christ. (Matt. 4:8)  But unlike Jesus, the anti-christ will accept Satan’s seat.  According to the Word of God, Satan’s seat is in Pergamum. (Rev. 2:13)  So it is possible that when the anti-christ first comes to power, he will have his throne in Pergamum, which is within the boundary of the end time kingdom of Turkey.

Daniel 8:8 Therefore the male goat became very great; but when he strong, the great horn (Alexander) was broken off; and in its place came up four notable ones (those who became kings over what is now Greece, Turkey, Syria and Egypt) towards the four winds of the sky.

(The breach in this prophecy)

Daniel 8:9 And out of one of them (Turkey) came a little horn, which grew exceedingly great, toward the south (Egypt), toward the east (Syria), and toward the pleasant land (Israel). 10 And it grew great, even to the host of the sky; and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled them. 11 He even magnified himself, even as (God) the Prince of the host; and by him (the anti-christ) the daily sacrifices were taken away, and the place of His sanctuary was cast down. 12 Because of the rebellion (of the Jews), an army was given over to the horn (the anti-christ) to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast the truth down to the ground. He did all this and worked and prospered.                 (Words in italics added)

It is because of the Jews rebellion against God, or as the N.I.V. says “Because of rebellion, the host of the saints” the Jews are given over to the anti-christ.  Not to completely destroy them, but in order to bring them to repentance. So that God can at least save a remnant of King David’s descendants.

In Luke chapter 21 verse 22, Jesus Christ speaks of days of vengeance.  During these days of vengeance, the Jews (according to Luke 21:23) will suffer both great distress and the wrath of God.  This time of vengeance began in 70 A.D. with great distress in the land and wrath against the Jews.  In a time still to come, it will end with great distress in the land and wrath against the Jews.

11. DANIEL'S DREAM OF FOUR BEAST.

In the book of Daniel chapter 7, Daniel tells us he had a dream and visions in the head at night. For greater understanding of this dream of Daniel’s, I strongly suggest that first you read all of Daniel chapter seven. In that dream Daniel saw four great beast; all of them different.

Daniel 7:17 The great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth.

Or as the N.I.V. says

The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth.

These beasts represent the same four world empires that are depicted in king Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of the large statue. (Verse 4) The first beast looked like a lion. This beast represents the empire of Babylon.

(Verse 5) The second beast looked like a bear. This beast represents the empire of the Medes and the Persians.  Because the kingdom of Persia was greater than the kingdom of the Medes, the bear is raised up on one side.  It has three ribs in its mouth between its teeth. This could be because the empire of the Medes and Persians covered the same area of land that will one day become the territory of three kings.  The same three kings who will be dethroned by the anti-christ. Just as the bear is instructed, “Arise, devour much flesh,” so Satan will also instruct the anti-christ, before he conquers this same territory.

alt

(Verse 6) The third beast, which looked like a leopard, represents the Greek Empire. Like a leopard, this beast struck fast and killed quickly. Its rise to a world conquering power was much faster than any of the other beasts.

The leopard has four wings on its back. By these wings the Greek Empire, is likened to something that can fly over the face of the whole earth, as it goes out to conquer the kingdoms of the world.

In Daniel 8:5, we read how the goat (which also represents the Greek Empire) “Came from the west, over the face of the whole earth without touching the ground.”

The leopard has four heads, while the goat has one notable horn, which is replaced by four notable horns.  The four heads on the leopard and the four horns that later come up on the goat; represent the four kingdoms that came out of the Greek Empire.

(Daniel 7:7 – 8 & 19 – 25.  Revelation 17:12 – 13 & 13:1 – 2)

The fourth beast, which was dreadful, terrible and exceedingly strong, will be the most dreadful of all the world empires ever, represents the Roman Empire that was and is yet to be. It is shown with ten horns.

Daniel 7:24 The ten horns that arise out of this kingdom are ten kings; and another shall rise after them; he shall be different from the first ones, and he shall subdue three kings.

Revelation 17:12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but they shall receive power as kings one hour with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast.”

The fourth beast was the Roman Empire, which is no more. But in a time yet to come, this beast will come back to life. This will come about by ten kings being raised up to receive authority as kings for one hour (a short time), over the ten kingdoms that will arise out of the same territory, that was once the Roman Empire.

These ten kings have one purpose in mind.  Having each received a kingdom, within the hour they will crown the anti-christ as emperor, the supreme ruler over the kingdoms of the world.  They will give the anti-christ their power and authority to rule over their kingdoms and their people for a period of seven years. They will place the anti-christ on Satan’s throne, which is in Pergamum (Rev. 2:13 & 13:2).  Today the town of Pergamum, which is in Turkey, is known as Bergama.

As the supreme ruler, the anti-christ will not only rule over the affairs of state, he will also rule over all the religions of the world.

Daniel 11:36 Then the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished: for what is determined shall be done. 37 Neither shall he regard the gods of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

The terms ‘time of wrath’, ‘days of great distress’, and ‘the days of vengeance’, are terms that are often used in an interchangeable way.  In this passage, when it says that the anti-christ “shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished, for what has been determined shall be done.”  It is referring to ‘the days of vengeance’ spoken of by Jesus (Luke 21:22).  A time when God’s wrath is upon the Jews; because of their rebellion against God and for their continual rejection of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

This end time world empire will have many of the characteristics of the former world empires.

Revelation 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion: and the dragon (Satan) gave him his power, and his seat (Satan’s throne), and great authority.     (Words in italics added)

Like the empire of the Greeks, (the leopard) the world empire will come into being very quickly, sweeping aside all opposition.  It will have feet like the feet of the bear.  This could be referring to the territories that were once controlled by the bear (the empire of the Medes and Persians). These are the same territories that will be the ruled over by the three end time kings, the kings of Turkey, Syria and Egypt, whom the anti-christ will de-throne.  Although the anti-christ will rule over the ten kingdoms, he will have greater control of these three.

At the height of its power, the beast (the Roman Empire) covered what will become the territory of the ten end time kings.  The ten kings will give their power and authority to the anti-christ for seven years.  So for seven years this coming World Empire will more or less cover the same territory, as was covered by the Roman Empire 2,000 years ago.

At the height of its power the Roman Empire was divided in two; the East Roman Empire and the West Roman Empire, so it will be with the end time World Empire. The anti-christ will rule over the ten kingdoms, for the time of the seven-year covenant, then the Empire will be divided in two, with the anti-christ holding on to power and authority over the three eastern end time kingdoms of Turkey, Syria and Egypt, while the seven western kingdoms form the Southern European Alliance. There is nothing new under the sun, it has happened before, and it will happen again.

The beast will have a mouth like the lion (The Empire of Babylon).  The people of Babylon looked upon their king as the supreme ruler over both the affairs of state and religion.  It was believed that the king sat on God’s throne as the ruler over all the kingdoms of the world, and that when he spoke; he spoke with the power and authority of God.  Therefore when the king of Babylon spoke from the throne, the words of his mouth were considered as unchangeable law.

The anti-christ too, will be looked upon as the supreme ruler over both the affairs of state and religion.  Although he will sit on Satan’s seat, with Satan’s power and authority, his subjects will worship him as the one who sits on God’s throne, and as one who speaks with the power and authority of God.  Therefore, just like the king of Babylon, when the anti-christ speaks from the throne, the words of his mouth will be considered as unchangeable law.

This form of government, better known as emperor worship or king worship, has been the most dominant form of government throughout the history of mankind.  It is as old as the Egyptian Empire, whose kings were worshiped as the Son of God.  It is as new as the Japanese Empire, whose emperor is still worshiped as the Son of God.  In between there have been many kings with power and authority over both the affairs of state and religion, who have either been worshiped as God, the Son of God, or as the one who sits on God’s throne as ruler over the kingdoms of the world.  This is Satan’s throne, the same throne that Satan offered to Jesus Christ, when he offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world to rule over (Matthew 4:8 – 9). In the lasts days Satan, the dragon, will give to the anti-christ his power, and his seat (Satan’s throne), and great authority (Rev 13:2).

Daniel 7:21 I watched, and the same horn (the anti-christ) made war against the saints (the Jews), and prevailed against them, 22 until the Ancient of Days (God) came, and judgment was given in favour of the saints of the Most High (God), and the time came that the saints to possess the kingdom.

Daniel 25a He (the anti-christ) shall speak great words against the Most High (God), and shall afflict (persecute) the saints of the Most High (God),

Daniel 25b (The anti-christ) shall think to change times and laws.     (Words in italics added.)

It is most likely, that the anti-christ will be of a faith that neither accepts the Christian calendar, nor Judeo-Christian laws.  Therefore when his army occupies Israel, it will be his intention to change times and law. Thus the anti-christ will try to impose on the Jews (and any Christians who happen to be in Israel) the times and laws of his faith, including the worship of the anti-christ, as either God, the Son of God, or the one who sits on God’s throne as ruler over the kingdoms of the world.

Daniel 25c And they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time.

That is the same, as saying the saints shall be given into the hand of the anti-christ for three-and-a-half-years.

The anti-christ, having gained all power and authority over the ten kingdoms of the world, and having de-throned the kings of Turkey, Syria and Egypt, will then turn on the nation of Israel and make war against the saints.  Once he has conquered the people of Israel, he will “sit as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:4). This is the setting up in the temple of the abomination that causes desolation.

From that day, the anti-christ will have a mandate to rule over the people of Israel, for the remaining three-and-a-half-years of the seven-year covenant which he made with the ten kings of the world.

So the saints are given over to the anti-christ by the kings of the world, for three-and-a-half-years.  However, after this time, the anti-christ will not give up Satan’s seat, and will remain in power and authority over the eastern part of the World Empire until he is removed by force of arms.

Daniel 7:26 But the court shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and destroy until the end. 27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole sky, shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey Him.'

After the forces of the anti-christ have occupied Israel for three-and-a-half-years, the court will sit, for the purpose of taking dominion and power away from the anti-christ.  But will this court be in the sky or on earth?  I believe at this time, two courts, one in the sky and one on earth will gather, both for the purpose of taking away dominion and power from the anti-christ.

Let us look at the earthly court first, for there will be a parallel between the earthly court and the court in the sky.  Therefore if we understand the earthly court, we will better understand the court in the sky.  The earthly court will be a world court, involving at least the seven remaining kings of the ten kings that gave dominion and power to the anti-christ seven-years before.

We need to consider:

• How long will it take for the seven kings to come together?

• How long will they wait for the anti-christ, to see if he is willing to give up his dominion and power?

• How long will it take the seven kings to agree on a new leader, to lead them in war against the anti-christ?

Then once the court has agreed to these things:

• How long will it take the new leader to raise an army to fight the anti-christ?

• How long will there be a standoff between these two forces?

What I am trying to say is this; we know that the world court will not meet on the last day of the seven-year covenant.  We can go further than that and say, no world court will even be called until the anti-christ has overstayed the seven-year covenant.  Then it will take time to gather the kings of the world together, and even if they agree on the first day to remove the anti-christ by force.  It will take time to agree on the composition of their forces, to agree on who will lead them against the anti-christ, and time to gather this force together.

In the natural, we know this will not happen overnight.  Even if things move very quickly, it will take months, it could even take years.  And it will be no different with the court in the sky and the action it takes to remove the anti-christ from his position of dominion and power.

According to Daniel chapter 7:25 – 27, the court in the sky (just like the world court) will not sit until after the seven-year covenant is completed. Let us now look at the court in the sky and the delays in the whole process from start to finish.

Daniel 7:9 “I watched till thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire. 10 A fiery stream flowed forth from before Him, a thousand thousands ministered unto him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.

Delay Number One, is a delay in the thrones (possibly including the twenty four elders in the sky) coming together, the thousands of angels who minister to God and the ten thousand times ten thousands of angels who stand before Him.  Only once all these have gathered, will God (The Ancient of Days) be seated.  Then the court will be seated and the books opened.

How do we know that this will not all just happen in the twinkling of an eye?  Because before Daniel tells us all this he said, “I watched till.”  In other words this all took time, and during this time Daniel watched till it had all happened.

Then once the court is seated, there are more delays in which Daniel continues to watch.

Daniel 7:11 “I then watched because of the voice of the great words which the horn (the anti-christ) was speaking. I watched till the beast (The world Empire and the anti-christ) was slain, and its body destroyed and given to the burning flame.     (Words in italics added)

Delay Number two, is while the court takes time to come to its judgement of the beast.  During this delay, Daniel ‘watched because of the voice of the pompous words which the’ anti-christ ‘was speaking.’

Delay Number three, is the delay between the court coming to its judgment to slay the beast, and this judgment being carried out.  During this delay, Daniel ‘watched till the beast was slain.’

According to Revelation 19:19 – 21 the beast will not be thrown into the lake of fire until after the battle of Armageddon.  According to Revelation 16:14 – 16, this battle will take place on that great day of God.  In other words, the battle of Armageddon will take place on The Last Day.

It is not until after all these delays that Daniel, while still watching, sees Jesus Christ coming in the clouds of the sky, and approaching God the Father, to receive dominion, glory and a kingdom that shall never pass away.

Daniel 7:12 “As for the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away, yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.”

As the beast is not slain until the last day; for the other beasts to have their power taken away, yet their lives prolonged, means that these other beasts having been stripped of their power and authority will continue into the 1,000-year reign of Jesus Christ.

Daniel 7:13 I saw visions in the night, and I looked and saw, coming with the clouds of the sky one like the Son of man, and he came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

12. 2,300 EVENINGS AND MORNINGS.

Daniel 8:13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?

In other words: Form the time the anti-christ takes away the daily sacrifices and places to abomination that causes desolation in the holy place, how long until all the events mentioned in this vision have come to pass?

Daniel 8:14 And he said unto me, until two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

The N.I.V. translates verse 14 as,

He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated.”

So 2,300 days after the abomination that causes desolation is place in the holy place, the fulfilment of the vision shall be completed, then sanctuary will be cleansed and the temple rededicated to God by the children of Judah and the children of Israel.

In Genesis chapter 1 the term evening and morning is clearly used six times to indicate one-day. So we can safely say 2,300 evenings and mornings, means 2,300 days.  Understanding this helps us to understand the connection between verse 14 and verse 26.

Daniel 8:26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: Therefore, you shut up the vision; for it shall not be for many days.

When Daniel wrote this vision of the 2,300 days it was about events that would happen in the distant future, and therefore at that time it was of no concern to the readers of the Bible.  Therefore the understanding of the vision was to be closed up.  But when Jesus Christ came, he broke open the seal so that we can now understand the visions and dreams recorded by Daniel the prophet.  Not only can we, but Jesus Christ expects us to understand them.

Matthew 24:15 Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place, (let the reader understand:)

The sanctuary (that is the holy place) will be cleansed 2,300 days after the setting up of the abomination that causes desolation has been set up in the holy place.

As there are 2,625 days from the day the forces of the anti-christ enter Jerusalem and set up the abomination in the temple, until the day his forces are defeated and the anti-christ is thrown into the lake of fire, but only 2,300 days until the temple is cleansed.  This means that the Jews will take back control of the temple, at least 325 days before the anti-christ ultimate defeat at the battle of Armageddon.

Summing up of the days recorded in the book of Daniel.

According to Daniel chapter 12 verses 11 to 12:  After the daily sacrifices are taken away, there will be 1,290 days, then 1,335 days, making a total of 2,625 days.  Then in verse 13:  Daniel is told that he will be raised from the dead at the end of days, meaning at the end of the 2,625 days.

From the taking away of the daily sacrifice, we are told there will be:

• Until the end of the seven-year covenant.            1,290 days

• Until the court is called together in the sky.         1,290 days

• Until the sanctuary is cleansed.                          2,300 days

• Until the resurrection at the End of Days.

alt

 (The resurrection at the Last Day.)           1,290 + 1,335 = 2,625 days

Note:  Before we nail down the number of days, we need to consider Jesus Christ statement about cutting short those days for the sake of the elect. (Matthew 24:22) This we will do in the next chapter.

13. GOD'S REVELATION THROUGH JESUS CHRIST.

Suggested readings:  Matthew 24:1 – 35, Mark 13:1 – 28 & Luke 21:5 – 36.

Matthew 24:1 Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him to show him the buildings of the temple. 2 Jesus said unto them; Do you not see all these things? Surely I say unto you, there shall not be left here one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down. 3 As he sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of your coming, and of the end of the age?

Luke21:5 And as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with valuable stones and gifts, he said, 6 As for these things which you see, the days will come, in the which there shall not be one stone left upon another, that shall not be thrown down. 7 And they asked him, saying, Teacher, but when shall these things be? And what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass? (Underlining added)

When Jesus Christ spoke to his disciples on the Mount of Olives, he would have said a lot more than what we have recorded in the gospels.  When Matthew, Mark and Luke wrote the gospels, each of them drew out and highlighted, that which God wanted them to reveal to his people, both Jews and Christians.

To Matthew, the main thrust of the disciples questioning is about the end of the age, and what will be the sign of Jesus Christ coming, and of the end of the age.

To Luke, the main thrust of the disciples questioning is about the temple, and by what sign will we know that the temple is about to be destroyed.  It is now history that the temple was destroyed in 70 A.D.  So much of what is recorded in Luke on what was going to happen before and around the time of the temple’s destruction is now history.  It is only after covering these events, that Luke then goes on to record something of what Jesus Christ said about end time events; events leading up to Jesus Christ Second Coming and the resurrection.

As I have already said, history has a habit of repeating itself; there is nothing new under the sun.  In the years 33 – 73 A.D. most true followers of Jesus Christ were thrown out of the synagogues, which was the mainstream church at that time.  Then from 66 – 73 A.D. the Imperial troops of Rome, hunted down, killed, punished or imprisoned both Jews and Christians in Judea because of their faith.  During these years there were also many false Christ.

As we come closer to the Second Coming, again we will see the true followers of Jesus Christ being thrown out of, not only the Jewish synagogue, but also out of main stream Christian churches.  Again the imperial troops will enter Judea, to hunt down both Jews and Christians alike, and again there will be many false Christ.

It is important to note that God’s wrath is not against the true followers of Jesus Christ, but against the Jews for their rebellion against him, and their rejection of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Through Jesus Christ, Christians were warned to flee Judea prior to Jerusalem’s destruction in 70 A.D.

Luke 21:20 When you shall see Jerusalem surrounded with armies, then know that its desolation has drawn near. 21 Then let them which are in Judea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of Jerusalem depart out; and let not them that are in the country enter into the city.

It is said, so many Christians believed these words of Jesus Christ and fled from Judea that many Jews still blame the Christians for the fall of Jerusalem saying; “If only the Christians had stayed and fought with us, Jerusalem would not have fallen.”

Through Matthew, Christians are again warned to flee Judea in the last days.

Matthew 24:15 Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (who ever reads, let him understand). 16 Then let them which are in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Just as there was no need for Christians to be caught by the imperial troops in 70 A.D. there will also be no need for Christians to be caught by the imperial troops during the great tribulation.  But some Christians will remain in Jerusalem and others will come to the faith.  Of these, because of their faith, most will suffer and many will die.

In giving us their account of the Mount of Olives discourse, all three writers, Matthew, Mark and Luke follow the same pattern. First Jesus Christ tells us of things that are not signs, or are not reliable signs.  Then Jesus tells us of the first of two reliable signs.  They are reliable signs, because they both will only happen once during the time of the prophecy.  After telling us the first sign, we are then told of the time between the two signs and what will happen during this time.  Then we are told of the second sign that will come after this time, but before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.  Finally we are told of things that will happen on the day of Jesus Christ Second Coming.

For a moment we will focus on Matthew’s account of what Jesus Christ said on the Mount of Olives.  To Matthew, the main questions to be answered were:  What will be the sign of your Second Coming, and of the end of the age?

Matthew 24:4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceives you. 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many, 6 you shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that you are not frightened: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

The disciples wanted to know when the end would be.  What Jesus is saying in verses 4 to 6 is that all these things will happen, but none of them are a sign that the end is near.

Matthew 24:7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, plagues, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Almost as soon as a woman becomes pregnant with child, she receives the beginning of birth pains; pains that will come and go until the birth of her child.  These pains let a woman know that she is with child and that one day she will deliver her child.  In the same way, ever since the dawn of civilization, nation has risen against nation, kingdom against kingdom and there have been famines and earthquakes in various places. These will continue until the End of Days.  They remind us that all is not well on this earth and that one-day, the Lord our God will return.  He will return to remove that which is wicked and restore all things to perfection.

Like birth pains, they will come and go.  They will come more often and they will get stronger.  But! They can never be taken as a sign.  Many a woman has been deceived into believing her child will be delivered in the next few hours, only to find out that she has to wait a little longer. Likewise, many Christians have been deceived into believing Jesus Christ will come this year or the next year, only to find that they have to wait a little longer.

Matthew 24:9 Then they shall deliver you up to be persecuted, and shall kill you: and you shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. 10 And then many shall be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. 11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. 12 And because wickedness shall abound, the love of many shall become cold. 13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. 14 And this, the good news of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then the end shall come.

These are latter birth pains.  The beginning of birth pains began with the dawn of civilization.  The later birth pains began with the dawn of the church age.  Right from the Day of Pentecost, true believers in Christ Jesus have been handed over to be persecuted, and by the time the young church was 20 years old, Christians were hated throughout the then known world, and were being put to death for sake of the name of Jesus Christ. Today most people of other faiths do not mind you preaching about God; as long as you do not preach that the name of Jesus is above all other gods. During these times of persecution many have turned away from the faith.  There have been times of increased wickedness, when the love of most has grown cold. These latter day birth pains, like the beginning of birth pains will also continue until the end, always getting stronger and more frequent, but they can never be taken as a sign.

Even the preaching of the good news of the kingdom to the whole world, as a testimony to all nations, is not a sign, but a birth pain.  By the year 100 AD; the young church had preached the good news to all the nations of the then known world.  By 200 AD; the gospel message had been taken west to the British Islands, east to China, and down into Africa and India.  They thought they had taken the good news into the whole world.  During the 1990s the church was aiming to have this task completed by the year 2,000.  But no matter how well the church completes this task; neither I nor anyone else, will ever be able to point at the completed task.  Saying; “Look! Look! See the sign of the coming of the Lord!” therefore the preaching of the good news of the kingdom to the whole world, is not a sign but a birth pain.

Having told us of the birth pains, things keep coming and going, and are therefore not reliable signs, Jesus Christ, through Matthew, then tells us of the first reliable sign;  which is the seeing of the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place.  A sign that both the end is near and Jesus Christ is coming back soon. Then Jesus tells us of the great tribulation, the time between the two signs.

Matthew 24:15 Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (who ever reads, let him understand). 16 Then let them which are in Judea flee into the mountains: 17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take anything out of his house: 18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to collect his clothes. 19 And woe unto them that are pregnant with child and to them that are nursing babies in those days! 20 But pray you that your flight is not in the winter, neither on the Sabbath day. 21 For then there shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 Except those days should be shortened, there would no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

This is the same time of tribulation, spoken of in the book of Daniel, chapter 12 verses 1 – 3.

Matthew 24:23 Then if any man shall say unto you, look, here is Christ, or there; do not believe. 24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. 25 Listen, I have told you before it happens. 26 Therefore if they shall say unto you, look, he is in the desert; do not go forth: or they say, look he is in the secret chambers; do not believe. 27 For as the lightning comes out of the east, and is seen as far as the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 28 For wherever the carcase is, there the eagles will be gathered together.

Verses 23 to 28 are telling us, that if anyone comes to you and tells you, “We have seen the Christ.”  Do not believe them, for they have not seen the Christ.  Also if we believe we have seen the Christ, and there are others who haven’t seen the Christ then we have not seen the Christ.  For when Jesus Christ comes, his appearing will be like that of a lightening flash, which appears in the east, and in a flash it is seen in the west.

When Jesus Christ returns, in an instant, we will all look up and we shall all see Him. Revelation 1:7 says of that moment, “Look, he comes with clouds, and every eye will see him, even they who pierced him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him. Even so, amen.”

How do we explain verse Matthew 24:28, which says; "For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”

If a large animal is about to die out in the wilderness, the flesh eating birds begin to circle round and round, waiting for the animal to die.  You can see the birds from a great distance, flying round and round.  Then when the animal dies, the birds gather together on the carcass for a great feast.

If you live in the wilderness and you see the birds circling, the first thing you think is that an animal is dying.  Then when you see the birds gathered together, the first thing you think is that an animal is dead.  It is so obvious, and no one (unless they are blind) can fail to see it.  So it will be when the Son of Man returns to earth.  The appearing of Jesus Christ will be so obvious, that no one will fail to see him arrive.  Not even the blind will fail to see the coming of Jesus Christ, for the eyes of the blind shall be opened and the lame shall dance with joy.

So, in verses 5 – 14 we are told of things that are not reliable signs.

In verse 15 we are told of the first reliable sign, the placing of the abomination of desolation in the holy place.

In verses 16 – 22 we are told of the great tribulation, the time between the first and second reliable signs.

In verses 23 – 28 we are told don’t be deceived by false Christ, and that when Jesus Christ does come, everybody will see him.

Then in verse 29 we are told when to expect the second reliable sign, and what that sign will be.

Matthew 24:29 Soon after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from the sky, and the powers of the sky shall be shaken:

Mark 13:24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon shall not give its light; 25 the stars of the sky will fall, and the powers that are in the sky shall be shaken.

What both Matthew and Mark are saying, is that it will be in the days after the great tribulation, that we will see the sun and the moon darkened and the stars fall from the sky.  This is the second of the two reliable signs that Jesus Christ is coming soon.

Note: From “Albert Barnes’ Notes on the Bible.”  Albert points out that the Greek word ‘eutheos’ translated as ‘immediately’ in the (K.J.V.) Matthew 24:29 can equally be translated as either ‘shortly’ or ‘soon,’ and he is of the opinion, ‘shortly’ or ‘soon’ would have been a better translation in this instance.

After telling us of this second sign, Jesus then tells us (in verse 30) of another sign.  A sign, not that he is coming soon, but a sign that he has come.  In verse 31, we are told what will happen when Jesus Christ comes.

Matthew 24:30 Then shall the sign of (Jesus Christ) the Son of man appear in the sky: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they (all mankind) shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other. (Words in Italics added)

Jesus Christ, just having told His disciples of the two signs by which they will know that He is coming soon, then tells them this parable.

Matthew 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; when his branch has become tender (sign number one), and puts forth leaves (sign number two), you know that summer is near: 33 So likewise you, when you shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. 34 Most surely I say unto you, this generation shall not pass, till all these things are fulfilled. 35 Sky and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

(Words in Italics added)

If you live in a land with trees that lose their leaves in winter; the question is how do you know that summer is near?  You know summer is near, because first the branches become tender (sign number one), then after a time the leaves come forth (sign number two).  These are both reliable signs, because unlike birth pains, as summer approaches these two signs always only happen once, always in the same order and always with a time in between.

So it will be in the days before the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of Man.  In the life time of the last generation, we will see first one sign, the abomination of desolation, followed by a time, the great tribulation, followed by the second sign, the darkening of the sun and the moon.  Jesus Christ himself gives us his word; that the generation that see these things will not pass away, without first seeing his return.

14. The Sign Of Jesus Christ Second Coming And Of The End Of The Age.
       (Focusing On Luke’s Account)

We will now have a closer look at Luke’s account of what Jesus Christ spoke to his disciples on the Mount of Olives.  The question Luke picks up on is, when will the temple and its buildings will be destroyed, and what is a sign by which we will know these things are about come to pass?

Luke 21:7 And they asked him, saying, Teacher, but when shall these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to come to pass?

From verse 8 to 19 we are told of things that like birth pains, are not reliable signs.  Then in verse 20, we are given the first of two reliable signs, a sign that Jerusalem and the temple are about to be destroyed.

From verse 21 to verse 24, we are told of the persecution that the Jews will suffer when Jerusalem is captured and destroyed by the Roman army.  We are also told what the time between the two reliable signs will be called.  In verse 22, this time is called The Days of Vengeance, and in verse 24, it is called The Times of the Gentiles.

The Days of Vengeance is the time of God’s out pouring of wrath upon the Jews, for their continued rebellion against God and their rejection of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer.

The Times of the Gentiles: This is best explained by saying, from about 2,000 BC; to 70 AD; many Children of Israel were saved, while very few Gentiles were saved.  Then from 70 AD; until the second reliable sign given in Luke (which also happens to be the same second reliable sign given in both the gospels of Matthew and Mark), very few Children of Israel are saved, while many Gentiles are saved.  This time when many Gentiles come to salvation is what Jesus Christ calls the times of the Gentiles.

Also from the time the armies of Rome captured Jerusalem, the Gentiles have trampled on Jerusalem and the temple site.  The Gentiles will continue to trample on Jerusalem and the temple site, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

You may say; but have not the Jews taken back Jerusalem from the Gentiles?  Yes, but the Gentiles will still not allow the Jews to make Jerusalem their capital, nor will they allow the Jews to rebuild the temple.  So the Gentiles still trample Jerusalem.  Before the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled, the Jews will once again fully control Jerusalem and rebuild the temple.  But this will only be like a morning star experience.

What is a morning star experience? In the Middle East, just before the sun rises in the morning, a bright star rises in the east, causing many to be deceived into believing that the night is over, when the night still has a little longer to go.  But to those who know how to read the signs, the morning star is a sign that the night is nearly over.

Likewise, when the Jews rebuild the temple, many will be deceived into believing that the times of the Gentiles have been fulfilled.  But to those who know how to read the signs, this will be a sign that the times of the Gentiles are nearly over.  For soon after the Jews have rebuilt and dedicated the temple, the armies of the World Empire will invade Jerusalem and set up the abomination of desolation in the temple.  Then the Gentiles will continue to trample on Jerusalem, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

Luke 21:20 When you shall see Jerusalem surrounded with armies, then know that its desolation has drawn near. 21 Then let them which are in Judea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of Jerusalem depart; and let not them that are in the country enter into the city. 22 For these are the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. 23 But woe unto them that are pregnant with child and to them that are nursing babies, in those days; for there shall be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. 24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

At this point, through Luke, Jesus has completely answered the question, “what will be the sign that Jerusalem and the temple are about to be destroyed?” And He has also told them of the things that will happen at that time, almost 2,000 years ago.

Between verse 24 & 25, we have a breach of about 2,000 years or more.  Then in verse 25 we are given the second reliable sign.  Not a sign that destruction is about to come upon Jerusalem and the temple, but a sign that Jesus Christ is about to return.  This second reliable sign is the same second reliable sign given by both Matthew and Mark.  Then in the second half of verse 25 & verse 26, we are told briefly how it will be on earth, between the time of the second sign and Jesus Christ Second Coming.

Luke 21: 25 And there shall be signs in the sun (the sun will be darkened), and in the moon (the moon will not give its light), and in the stars (the stars will fall from the sky); and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26 Men's hearts failing them for fear and expectation, looking for those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of sky shall be shaken.   (Words in Italics added from Matthew 24:29

Verse 27 tells us of the day that the Lord Jesus Christ comes back to earth.

Verse 27:  “Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.”

Verse 28:    “Now when you see these things begin to happen.”

What things?  The darkening of the sun, the moon no longer giving its light and the stars falling from the sky.

Verse 28 “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

From the day we first see the sun darkened, God’s wrath will lift off the Jews, and his full wrath will fall on the wicked of the world.  All around us, the wicked will be suffering and dying in their thousands.  But we who are sealed in Christ will be protected from the wrath of God.  So don’t fill yourself with fear by looking around.  Look up to Jesus Christ, our Deliverer, for our redemption draws near.

Then Luke records the parable of the tree.

Luke 21:29 And he spake to them a parable; Look at the fig tree, and all the trees; 30 When they are putting forth their leaves, you see and know of your own selves that summer is now near at hand. 31 So likewise you, when you see these things come to pass (the signs in the sun the moon and the stars), know you that the kingdom of God is near at hand. 32 Surely, I say unto you, this generation shall not pass away, until all have been fulfilled.                                                                                                                               (Words in italics added.)

Luke’s account of this parable is different from Matthew and Mark’s account. Because in Matthew and Mark, we are told of two reliable signs coming in the life time of the last generation, while in Luke we are only given one sign, coming during the life time of the last generation.

After studying the writings of Daniel and the discourse of Jesus Christ on the signs of the end of the age, these facts become clear.

We will see two reliable signs, before the day of our Lord’s return:

• The first sign, the abomination of desolation, will be seen before the days of great distress (The great tribulation).  This sign will also come in the middle of the beast’s seven-year covenant with ten kings. (Daniel 9:27; 11:31: & 12:11.)

• During this time of great tribulation, the faith of Christians worldwide will be tested, and God’s wrath will be against the Jews. (Daniel 11:36 & Luke 21:22 – 23)

• Following this time of great tribulation, we will see the second sign, the darkening of the sun, the moon not giving light, and the stars falling from the sky.

• Soon after we have seen the second sign, the Lord Jesus Christ shall come again.

• On the day the Lord returns for his own, there will be a loud trumpet call (Matthew 24:31).  This will be the sounding of the last trumpet (I Corinthians 15:52).

• The day Jesus Christ comes again, is also the resurrection day of all those who have their names written in the Book of Life and who have died before that day.

According to the writings of Daniel, the great tribulation starts with the forces of the anti-christ invading Jerusalem and setting up the abomination of desolation in the temple. The great tribulation will end with the withdrawal of the anti-christ forces from Jerusalem after 1,290 days of occupation. Thus according to Daniels writing, the time of the great tribulation will be 1,290 days. However it would appear that the local Moslems will hold on to the temple sight for another 1,010 days. All told the Gentiles shall occupy the temple for 1,290 days + 1,010 days, which equals 2,300 days; after which the temple will be cleansed.

However Jesus Christ says, that the time of the great tribulation will be cut short for the sake of the elect (Matthew 24:22).  When we read Christ Revelation to the churches through John, we find that this cutting short of the time of great tribulation brings about many changes to the number of days given in Daniel.

alt

For example, in Daniel there are three periods of time leading up to the End of Days.  The first period is 1,230 days, the second is 1,290 days, and the third is 1,335 days.  But when we read Christ Revelation to the churches through John, we find that these three periods of time are all rounded off to 1,260 days.  1,260 days equals forty-two-months, and forty-two-months equals three-and-a-half-years.

Also we are told in Daniel 8:13 - 14, that there will be 2,300 days from the time the day that the abomination of desolation is placed in the temple, until the day the temple is cleansed. But in the book of Revelation, this time is cut short from 2,300 days to 1,979 days.

15. God’s Revelation Through Paul

The Resurrection Of The Dead In Christ.

1 Corinthians15:20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of them that slept. 21 For since by man came death, by man also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward they that are Christ's at His coming.

God through Paul gives us the order in which the dead will be resurrected.  Firstly Christ who is the firstfruits (because of Matthew’s account of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, it is possible that this resurrection also included the 24 elders), then when Jesus Christ comes again, those who are Christ’s will be resurrected.  These are the only two days given by Paul, for the resurrection of the saints.

1 Corinthians 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed- - - - - - 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

From this passage we learn that we will not all die.  But in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the sounding of the last trumpet, we will all be changed, from that which is perishable, into that which is imperishable.  If we are all going to be changed in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, then we must all be raised on one specific day.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:13 – 18, Paul writes;

1Thessalonians 4:13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again; in like manner God will bring with him those who sleep in Jesus. 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will not by any means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from the sky with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

So at the sounding of the last trumpet, first the dead in Christ shall be raised from the dead. Then we shall all be caught up together to meet with Jesus Christ in the clouds.

16. God Is Holding Back The Man Of Lawlessness.

Paul in his writings to the Corinthians and in his first letter to the Thessalonians explains the mystery.  We shall not all sleep, but at the time of the resurrection we will all be changed at the same time, from that which is perishable into that which is imperishable.  Paul also makes it very clear that those who are still alive when the Lord returns, will not be caught up to meet the Lord in the air before those who have died knowing the Lord.

But it would appear others were preaching and teaching that the resurrection had already taken place (2 Timothy 2:16 –18), some even saying that they were sent by Paul, Silas and Timothy to teach these things.  It was to counter these wrong teachings that Paul writes his second letter to the Thessalonians, reminding them of the things he had already taught them.

One of the things that Paul had already taught them, was that the day of the Lord’s coming and our being gathered to him, will not happen until the rebellion occurs and the man of sin (the anti-christ) is revealed.

II Thessalonians 2:1 Now brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our being gathered together unto him, we ask 2 that you not be so quickly shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come except there first comes a falling away (Or as the N.I.V. put it, “until the rebellion occurs”), and that man of sin (the anti-Christ) is revealed, the son of damnation; 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. 5 Do you not remember that, when I was still with you, I told you these things?                                                                   (Words in Italics added.)

According to verse 3, the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, will not happen before these two things happen.

1:  The rebellion occurs.

2:  The man of sin (the anti-christ) is revealed.

In Daniel chapter 8 verses 8 to 12, we are told both who will be in rebellion and how the man of sin (the anti-christ) is revealed.

alt

Daniel 8:8 Therefore the male goat (Greece) became very great; but when he strong, the great horn (Alexander) was broken off; and in its place came up four notable ones towards the four winds of the sky. 9 And out of one of them (Turkey) came a little horn (the anti-christ), which grew exceedingly great, toward the south (Egypt), toward the east (Syria), and toward the pleasant land (Israel). 10 And it grew great, even to the host of the sky; and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled them. 11 He even magnified himself, even as (God) the Prince of the host; and by him the daily sacrifices were taken away, and the place of His sanctuary was cast down. 12 Because of rebellion (the rebellion of the Jews) an army was given over to the horn (the anti-Christ) to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast the truth down to the ground. He did all this and worked and prospered. (Words in Italics added)

The N.I.V. translates verse 12 like this,

Because of rebellion, the host [of the saints] and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground.

It is the Jews, the host of the saints, who by their rejection of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer are in rebellion against God.  It was because of this rebellion, that God allowed Jerusalem and the temple to be destroyed in 70 AD. (Luke 19:41 – 44 & 21:20 – 24).  In a time still to come, the Jewish leaders will reconfirm their rejection of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer, once again bringing the Jews (the host of the saints) into rebellion against God.

Because of this rebellion, half way through the seven-year covenant, the Jews and the daily sacrifice will be given over to the anti-christ.  Then the anti-christ will set himself up to be as great as the Prince of the Host.  He will do this by opposing and exalting himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” (11 Thessalonians 2:4)

The anti-christ, or an image placed by the anti-christ in the temple as God, is the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel.  Jesus Christ tells us, that the abomination is a sign that he will be returning soon.  Paul tells us that we will see this event before both the resurrection of the saints and before the return of Jesus Christ.  Paul also tells us, that it is by this event that the man of sin, the anti-christ will reveal himself.

II Thessalonians 2:6 And now you know who is withholding him (the anti-christ), that he may be revealed in his (God’s) own time. 7 For the mystery of injustice is already work; only he who now withholds him will do so until he is taken out of the way.                                                                                                                                      (Words in Italics added)

Who is holding back the anti-christ?  Who is the anti-christ?  Jesus Christ is God in the flesh.  The anti-christ is Satan in the flesh.  Who holds back Satan?  God by His own power and authority holds back Satan.  This truth is revealed to us in the first two chapters of Job.  Satan wanted to test God’s servant Job.  Twice Satan goes to God to seek permission to test Job.

The first time:

Job 1:12 So the LORD said to Satan, "Look, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay your hand on his person.” - - - - - - -

From that moment on, Satan, the mystery of lawlessness was at work against Job.  But God was holding Satan back, to the extent that Satan could not lay a hand on his person

Again Satan seeks permission to test Job.

Job 2:6 And the LORD said to Satan, "Look, he is in your hand, but spare his soul."

From that moment on, the hand of God that had held back Satan was all but lifted.  There was now nothing holding Satan back.  Satan had God’s permission to do all he could to Job, except take his soul. God does not give Satan permission to take or destroy man’s soul.

Although Satan has come for to steal and to kill and destroy (John 10:10), it is only God who is able to take and destroy man’s soul.

Matthew 10:28 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in the fires of Sheol.

Every man who has ever sat on the throne, as ruler over the kingdoms of the world, and has exalted himself over both state and religion, (no matter whether he is or was a good king or a bad king) sits on Satan’s throne, and is a type picture of the anti-christ.  Such a man was the Pharaoh of Egypt.

When the children of Israel left Egypt, the Lord went before them in cloud and fire.

Exodus 13:21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, to go by day and night. 22 He took not away the pillar of cloud by day, or the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

On coming to the sea.

Exodus 14:19 And the angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them, and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them. 20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. It was a cloud and darkness to one but it gave light by night to the other, so that the one came not near the other all the night.

All night long, the Angel of God (that is God) stood between the children of Israel and the Egyptians, holding back Pharaoh and his army.  In the morning, the children of Israel set out across the Red Sea, with the waters mounted up either side of them.  At that time, the Angel of the Lord who had been holding back Pharaoh and his army was taken out of the way.  Although the Angel of the Lord (God) is no longer holding back the Pharaoh, God does not allow Pharaoh or his army to destroy those who pass through the waters.  God does not abandon those who put their trust in him.

Exodus 14:23 And the Egyptians, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea. 24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, 25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drove them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fights for them against the Egyptians.

When the Angel of the Lord (who was holding back the Pharaoh and his army), was taken out of the way, only those who passed through the waters made good their escape.  The Angel of the Lord was taken out of the way, but he remained with those who passed through the waters. God did not abandon his own.

When the Angel of the Lord (who was holding back the armies of Rome in 70 A.D.), was taken out of the way, he remained with the baptized believers who made good their escape.  Again God did not abandon his own.

So it will be in the last days.  It is the Angel of the Lord (none other than God Himself) who is holding back the anti-christ and his army, that he (the anti-christ) may be revealed in his (God’s) own time.  When God takes the Angel of the Lord away, the anti-christ and his armies will come against the children of Israel.  At that time the baptized believers in Christ will make good their escape, and the Angel of the Lord will stay with them.  God will not abandon his own.

17. The Revelation Of Jesus Christ Through John.

alt

The Seven Seals.

Although I seek from God the Father a full understanding of Jesus Christ’s Revelation to us through John, believing that I shall receive that which I have requested in the name of Jesus Christ, as yet I have not yet received that full understanding.  But I do understand that God’s Word will never disagree with God’s Word.  What God has revealed to us through Daniel, and confirmed to us through both his Son Jesus Christ and his servant Paul, will not be changed.

Matthew 24:35 (Jesus said) Sky and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

However because Jesus Christ himself said (in Matthew 24:22), that the days of distress will be shortened for the sake of the elect; we do have a licence to alter the length of days, as given in Daniel, (except for the time of the seven-year covenant) in order to bring what has been revealed to us through Daniel, into agreement with what has been revealed to us through John.  But we are not given any licence to alter the order of events as revealed through Daniel.  So the order of events revealed in Jesus Christ’s revelation through John, must agree with God’s revelation through Daniel.

Through Jesus Christ, we learn that two reliable signs will precede his second coming; signs that will both only happen once, in the given order, and within the lifetime of the last generation before his coming. The first sign; being the sign of the abomination of desolation, followed by the great tribulation.  Then after the great tribulation we will see the second sign, the darkening of the sun and the moon, and the stars falling from the sky.

So when John saw this second sign first during the time of the sixth seal, then during the time of the fifth trumpet, and again during the time of the fifth bowl of God’s wrath, we then know that the time of the seals, the trumpets, and the bowls of wrath, all overlap.

Through Paul we learn that the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of the saints will be at the sounding of the last trumpet. Therefore, everything that happens during the time of the trumpets, up till the sounding of the last trumpet, is before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of the saints.

The seven seals.

Revelation 6:1 I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard, as it were the voice of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. 2 And I looked, and saw a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer.

This rider is the anti-christ, crowned as ruler over The World Empire at the beginning of the seven-year covenant, spoken of by Daniel.

Revelation 6:3 When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, Come and see. 4 And there went another horse, a red horse, and it was given to him that he that sat upon it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.

After the anti-christ (the king of the north) has been on Satan’s seat for nearly three-and-a-half-years, there will be a fall out between him and Egypt (the king of the south).  The anti-christ will invade Egypt, which upsets some of the western kings, who send a fleet of warships from Cyprus against the anti-christ.  At that time, three-and-a-half-years into the seven-year covenant, the anti-christ will withdraw from Egypt and invade Judea and capture Jerusalem (Daniel 11:29 – 31).

Revelation 6:5 When he opened the third seal, I heard the third beast saying, "Come and see." So I looked, and saw a black horse, and he who sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beast saying, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and do not hurt the oil and the wine."

After the seven-year covenant, the black horse brings famine to the land and there will be no rain for the next three-and-a-half-years.  At first, because of their shallow root system, the famine will strike the wheat and the barley.  While at first, because of their much deeper root system, the famine will not affect the grape vines and the olive trees. For this reason the price of the wheat and barley will rise, while the price of the oil and the wine remain comparatively low.

Revelation 6:7 When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast saying, "Come and see." 8 So I looked, and saw, a green horse. And he who sat on him was named Death, and Sheol followed with him. And power was given to them over a fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, with famine, with death, and by the beasts of the earth

As the famine begins to bite even harder, The World Empire finds itself at war with enemies within and enemies without.  A fourth of the world is plunged into war, plagues break out, and wild beasts driven by hunger attack mankind.

The horse is green or in Greek chloros in colour. According to Wikipedia.org

"Based on uses of the word in ancient Greek medical literature, several scholars suggest that the color reflects the sickly pallor of a corpse."

Revelation 6:9 When he opened the fifth seal; I saw under the altar the souls of them who had been slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held. 10 They cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood upon them that dwell on the earth? 11 Then white robes were given to every one of them; and it was said to them that they should rest a little while longer, until both their fellow servants and also their brethren, who should be killed as they, should be fulfilled.               (Underlining added)

The saints of God are killed no-where else, other than on the earth.  Therefore to be under the altar upon which they were slain, these souls of the saints had to be under the earth within the world of the dead. Therefore, we know what is happening here at the time of the fifth seal, is taking place before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.  Why?

1:  The dead in Christ have not yet been raised from the dead.

2:  There are still saints of God being killed for maintaining their testimony of faith in Jesus Christ.

Revelation 6:12 I looked and saw when he opened the sixth seal, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood. 13 And the stars of the sky fell to the earth, even as a fig tree cast her untimely figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. 14 Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.

According to Jesus Christ’s discourse with his disciples, the darkening of the sun and the moon, and the falling of the stars, is the second of two signs by which we will know that he is returning shortly. This sign will be preceded by a great earthquake (Rev 6:12), an earthquake that will open the bottomless pit (Rev 9:2).

This sign of the sun and the moon darkening and the stars falling from the sky, will come:

• After the great tribulation. (Matthew 24:29)

• After the times of the Gentiles have been fulfilled. (Luke 21:24 – 25)

• After the saints of God have been sealed with the seal of God on their foreheads. (Rev 9:4)

This earthquake and the signs in the sky will come approximately 1,979 days after the setting up in the temple of the abomination that causes desolation, and 541 days before the end of days.

Then at the end of days there will be another great earthquake, an earthquake that will remove every mountain and island from its place and cause every major city worldwide to collapse.  This is the same earthquake as the earthquake that comes with the sounding of the seventh trumpet (Rev 11:19) and with the outpouring of the seventh bowl of God’s wrath. (Rev 16:18 –20)

When we read about the sixth seal, we are looking at events that begin to happen soon after the great tribulation.  Everything from the earthquake mentioned in verse 12, through to the sky receding like a scroll when it is rolled up in verse 14 will happen very quickly.  This may all happen in one day, or a week at the most.  But the earthquake mentioned at the end of verse 14 will not come until approximately 541 days after the great earthquake mention in verse 12.  (John tells us what will happen during these 541 days, when he records what he saw during the sounding of the 5th and 6th trumpets.

With the coming of the end of days

Revelation 6:14b - - - - - every mountain and island was moved out of its place. 15 The kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, 16 and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 “For the great day of his wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”

These last 541 days, coming between the day the sun and the moon are darkened, and the great day of God’s wrath, are days in which God’s wrath is poured out on the unrighteous.  But because it is not appointed to the righteous to suffer wrath, “but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thess 5:9), we know that God, in order to protect the righteous, must seal the righteous with his seal, before this time of wrath.

Jesus Christ having first revealed to John what will happen to the unrighteous during the time of the sixth seal,  then reveals to John what will happen to the righteous during the time of the sixth seal.  Starting in chapter 7 verses 1 – 8, by looking at the need to seal the righteous for their protection before the time of God’s wrath,  then jumping ahead in time, to after the 541 days of wrath and after the resurrection of the saints. Finally, verses 9 to 17 look at the gathering together of the saints in the sky.

When John wrote down what the Lord had shown him, he never put in chapters.  But if we are to have chapters, chapter 8:1 should really be chapter 7:18.  For this verse speaks of the saints standing in silence in the sky before the throne, during the time of the seventh seal.

Revelation 7:1 After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree. 2 Then I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3 saying, Do not hurt the earth, the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the bond servants of our God on their foreheads. 4 And I heard the number of them who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed:

What is the seal of God?  It is written in Ephesians;

Ephesians 1:13 In (Jesus Christ) whom you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the good news of your salvation: in whom also after you believed, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise. (Words in italics added)

When we first believe, repent and receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we are marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit.

The opening of the sixth seal comes after the ending of both the great tribulation and the times of the Gentiles.  During the times of the Gentiles many Gentiles have received the gift of the Holy Spirit, the seal of God and therefore do not need to receive the seal of God at this time.  However for the Israelites, who have just gone through 1,979 days of great tribulation, if God is now going spare even a remnant of them from the days of wrath, God will now have to move very quickly, so that his chosen remnant of Israelites will also be marked in Jesus Christ with the seal of God, before God’s wrath begins to fall upon who have received the mark of the beast and have bowed down and worshiped the beast.

Throughout Judea and Jerusalem, it will be like the day of Pentecost.  144,000 Israelites, all of a sudden having their spiritual eyes and ears opened to the truth, will accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.  Repenting of their sins and being baptized into Christ for the remission of their sins, and receiving the promised Holy Spirit, which is promised to all who repent and are baptized (Acts 2:38).  541 plus days after the sealing of God’s servants, John is looking at a great multitude that no one could number.

Revelation 7:9 After this I looked and saw, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and tribes, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms branches in their hands;

In verses 10 to 17, John continues to look at this great multitude before the throne and in front of the Lamb, as they and the 24 elders worshiped God and the Lamb.  This time of worship is climaxed by the opening of the seventh seal and silence for about half an hour.

Revelation 8:1 And when He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in the sky for about half an hour.

After seeing the things that happen during the opening of the seals, Jesus Christ then takes John back in time. Still before the throne of God, where (in verses 2 to 6) John is shown the angels in sky preparing to sound the seven trumpets.

18. THE TWO WITNESSES.

It is during the time of the trumpets that John is told about the two witnesses.  It is helpful for us, to have a quick look at these two before looking at the sounding of the trumpets.

Revelation 11:1 Then I was given a reed like a rod. And the angel stood, saying, Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. 2 But do not measure the court which is outside the temple, for it has been given unto the Gentiles. And they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months. 3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth. 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lamp stands standing before the God of the earth. 5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if any man desires to hurt them, he must be killed in this manner. 6 These have power to shut the sky, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.

Note:  1,260 days equal 42 months, which equal three-and-a-half-years.

In Luke 9:28 –36 we are told of two Old Testament saints Moses and Elijah appearing before Jesus Christ.  Moses had earlier turned the waters into blood and struck the earth with every kind of plague, and Elijah had stopped the rain for three-and-a-half-years (James 5:17).  It sounds most likely that these two, will be the two witnesses.  God will once again return these two men to earth, and again they will strike the earth with every kind of plague and shut up the sky so that it will not rain for 1,260 days.

According to Daniel’s dream of the beast and the interpretation, the saints are given over to the anti-Christ for three-and-a-half-years, this being the last three-and-a-half-years of the seven-year covenant.  Thus the forces of the anti-christ (the Gentiles) will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months. After this period of three-and-a-half-years, although the anti-christ no longer has any legal mandate to rule over the empire, he will still continue to rule over the eastern part of the empire.  At this time in Judea, not only will we see the arrival of the two witnesses who have power to devour their enemies with fire that proceeds from their mouth, the Jews will rise up against the anti-christ and his troops, driving them out of Judea and Jerusalem, allowing the Jews in Judea to enter a period of self rule. However it does seem likely the local Moslems will remain in control of the temple for another two years.

Before the end, we are told that the king of the south (the king of Egypt) will come against the beast (the king of the north).  The king of the north, like a whirlwind, will over throw the king of the south and many other countries, but Edom, Moab and Ammon (These countries lie east of Judea in what is now Jordan) will be free from the power of the beast.  After these victories, the king of the north will again enter Judea and capture Jerusalem (Daniel 11:40 – 41).

Having recaptured Jerusalem, the beast will then kill the two witnesses.  But then news will come from the east and the north, of armies coming against him and he will go out to do battle with them at Armageddon.  (Daniel 11:44 – 45)

Revelation 11:7 Now when they have (The two witnesses) finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. 8 And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. 9 Then those of the people, tribes, tongues, and nations will see their dead bodies for three-and-a-half days, and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves. 10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, make merry, and shall send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those that dwelt on the earth. 11 Now after the three-and -a-half days the spirit of life from God entered them, and they stood upon their feet, and great fear fell upon those who saw them. 12 And they heard a loud voice from the sky saying unto them, Come up here. And they ascended up into the sky in a cloud, and their enemies looked and saw them.

(Words in italics added)

After the Gentiles have trampled on the holy city for three-and-a-half-years, the two witnesses arrive and for the next three-and-a-half-years they preach Jesus Christ and the kingdom of God. When they have finished their testimony, the beast kills the two witnesses and their dead bodies are left lying on the streets of Jerusalem. Then after three-and-a-half-days the breath of life from God enters them, they stand to their feet and they are caught up to the sky in the cloud of God’s glory.

These two have their names written in the book of life.  Daniel is told of a time when everyone whose name is found written in the book will be delivered, including many who will rise from the dead (Daniel 12:1 – 2). These two have been preaching about Jesus Christ for three-and-a-half- years.  God has given these two to Jesus Christ who said that he would rise up all that the Father had given him at the last day (John 6:39 – 40). The general overall content of both the Old and the New Testament Scriptures is that all righteous dead, will be raised from the dead on the same day.

1Thessalonians 4: 13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.

So three-and-a-half-days after these two witnesses are killed, these two witnesses along with all the other dead in Christ will be raised from the dead.  At the same time as the dead in Christ are raised up, a severe earthquake hits Jerusalem.

Revelation 11:13 In the same hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city fell, and seven thousand men were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were afraid and gave glory to the God of the sky. 14 The second woe is past. Look and see, the third woe is coming quickly.

With the saints caught up into the sky, who are these terrified survivors, who give glory to God?  In Philippians we are told;

Philippians 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in the sky, and things on earth, and things under the earth. 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Every knee and every tongue, this includes very knee and tongue of the wicked.  On earth at this time, the wicked have just been through 541 days of God’s wrath.  It is now the Great Day of God’s Wrath.

In Jerusalem, the day starts with by a great earthquake which kills 7,000 men, and all over world the cloud of God’s glory appears in the sky. At that time, the graves break open, the dead are raised to life, and the saints are caught up to meet Jesus Christ in the sky.  Fear grips the wicked and they hide in the caves and the rocks.  Trembling with fear, they bow the knee and with their tongue they acknowledge Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Then as the day draws to a close, another great earthquake, centred on every major city of the world, strikes the earth, very mountain flees and every valley is exulted, and great hail falls out of sky upon man (Revelation 16:18 – 21 & Isaiah 40:4).

God does nothing without first telling his servants the prophets (Amos 3:7).  God told Noah, seven days before the rains came, that it was going to rain in seven days.  Noah was also told at the same time, to enter the ark along with his family and animals.  Then, when they were all safely on the ark, God shut the door.  There shut in, God protected Noah and his family, while the wicked were destroyed. The day before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, God told Abraham of his intentions.  Then God did not rain down fire and brimstone on Sodom and Gomorrah until Lot had been both warned by the angels, and had escaped to the city of Zoar.  Days before the plague of death passed through Egypt, God gave instructions to Moses.  Instructions that resulted in the children of Israel being shut in their homes, protected by the blood of the lamb, as the plague of death passed over them.  So it will be on the last day, for those marked in Christ with the seal of the Holy Spirit.  Warned by God,rough his servants the prophets, they will remain shut behind their doors, until the wrath of God is past; or as Isaiah writes, until the indignation is past.

In Isaiah chapter 26 verses 19 to 21, God has this to tell us about the resurrection and the day of his wrath.  Firstly in verse 19, God tells us of the coming resurrection.  Secondly in verse 20, God tells us what we should do, when we see this day approaching.  Thirdly in verse 21, God tell us what will happen on that day.

The coming resurrection.

Isaiah 26:19 Your dead shall live; together with my dead body they shall arise.  Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

What we are to do as we see that day approaching.

Isaiah 26:20 Come, my people, enter your chambers, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment, until the indignation is past.

For this is what will happen on that day.

Isaiah 26:21 For behold, the LORD comes out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; the earth will also disclose her blood, and will no more cover her slain.

19. THE SEVEN TRUMPETS.

Revelation 8:6 And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound. 7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up. 8 Then the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood, 9 and the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, those having souls, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed. 10 Then the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from the sky, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters, 11 and the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

alt

It is during the time of the sounding of the second and third trumpets, that the waters are turned into blood.  Clearly the two witnesses, who have the power to turn the waters into blood, are prophesying during the time of the second and third trumpets.

Revelation 8:12 Then the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was struck, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. 13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of the sky, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inheritance of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

By the time the fifth trumpet is sounded, Moses and Elijah have been prophesying for approximately 719 days, striking the earth with plagues that fell on both the righteous and the unrighteous alike.  When Moses was first on the earth, he struck the land of the Egyptians ten times with plagues.  The first three plagues fell on both the Children of Israel and the Egyptians alike.  But with the later plagues, God made distinction between the Israelites and the Egyptians.  Neither the Israelites nor their land suffered from the later plagues that Moses called down upon the Egyptians and their land.

So it will also be in the last days.  In the first 719 days of the two witnesses, in the days before the sun and the moon are struck, God will not make any distinction between the righteous and the unrighteous.  But after the sun and the moon are struck, for approximately 541 days, God will make distinction between the righteous and the unrighteous.  During those last days, only the unrighteous and their land will be struck by the later plagues, (which will be the worst of the plagues) while the righteous and their land will be protected by the seal of God on their foreheads.

Note:  When Moses called down the plague of darkness on the Egyptians, it only came upon the Egyptians, and not upon the Children of Israel. Also in Genesis chapter 26, we find Isaac planting crops and reaping a hundredfold in the mist of famine.  God is well able to look after his own, while all around them the unrighteous suffer his wrath.

Revelation 9:1 Then the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from the sky to the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit. 3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads. 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he strikes a man. 6 In those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; they shall desire to die, but death shall flee from them. 7 The form of the locusts were like unto horses prepared for battle; and on their heads were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men, 8 their hair was like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 10 They had tails like that of scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. 11 And they had a king over them, the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon (the destroying angel), but in the Greek tongue his name is Apollyon (the destroyer). 12 One woe is past; Look and see, two more woes are coming.

From the sounding of the fifth trumpet, till the sounding of the sixth trumpet, is the time of the first woe.  During this time, for five months, supernatural locusts torment the unrighteous, while the righteous remained unharmed.  Why are the righteous unharmed at this time? Because righteous have all accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer, and have all received the seal of God on their foreheads, and when the locust are sent out to torment man for five months, they are commanded only to torment those who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

Revelation 9:13 Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "let loose the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates." 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year (13 months 1 day and one hour), were let loose to kill a third of mankind. 16 Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulphur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and from their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three a third of mankind was killed, fire, smoke, and brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For their power was in their mouth and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm. 20 But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, yet did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither can see, nor hear, nor walk. 21 Neither did they repent of their murders or their sorceries or their fornication nor of their thefts.        (Words in italics added)

Between the sounding of the sixth trumpet and the sounding of the seventh trumpet, there are 13 months, one day and one hour.  This is the time of the second woe, and takes us up to the last day.  The day the two witnesses along with all the dead in Christ are raised from the dead.  A day in which not only is Jerusalem hit by a great earthquake, but a day in which every city of the world is hit by a great earthquake.

Then the seventh and last trumpet is sounded.  For the unrighteous this announces the third time of woe, but for the believers in Christ, the last trumpet announces the second coming of Jesus Christ and the day the dead in Christ are raised.

1 Corinthians15:52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

Revelation 11:15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in the sky, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever!" 16 And the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their seats, fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying: "We give you thanks, O Lord God Almighty, the One who is and was and is to come, because you have taken your great power and have reigned. 18 The nations were angry, and your wrath has come, and the time for the dead to be judged, and that you should reward your bondservants the prophets and the saints, and those who fear your name, small and great, and should destroy those who destroy the earth." 19 Then the temple of God was opened in the sky, and there in the temple was seen the ark of his covenant. And there were flashes of lightning, voices, and rumblings of thunder, an earthquake, and great hail.

This great earthquake and hailstorm, is the same earthquake and hailstorm that comes with the outpouring of the seventh bowl of God’s wrath. (Rev. 16:17 – 21)

For the unrighteous, the last day of this age begins with a great earthquake (centred on the Mount of Olives), and ends with a great earthquake (centred on every city of the world), and a great hailstorm.  The seventh trumpet brings to an end the second time of woe, and brings in the third time of woe.  This time will last only one day, but by the end of that day, all the unrighteous will be removed from the face of the earth. But for the righteous (the believers in Christ Jesus), who are supernaturally protected at first in their dwellings, then later caught up to meet with Jesus Christ in the clouds, this will be a day of great joy.

20. THE SEVEN BOWLS OF GOD'S WRATH.

Suggested reading:  Revelation chapters 15 and 16.

In order to fully understand the Revelation of Jesus Christ through John, including chapters 15 and 16, we must remember that John throughout the receiving of the whole revelation, (physically speaking) never once left the Island of Patmos.  But by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, John is able to see things, past, present, future, in the world of the dead, on earth and in the sky, all at the same time.  (Eph.4: 9 – 10)

As John watched the Lamb open the seals in the sky, John was not just seeing in the sky but also things on earth and under the earth.  As John was seeing the trumpets sounding in the sky, he was also seeing things on earth.  When John is shown the things in chapters 15 and 16, he is again being shown things in the sky, on earth and under the earth.  John is being shown into all these areas simultaneously.

Revelation 15:1 Then I saw another sign in the sky, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.  2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gained victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. 3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, great and marvellous are your works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are your ways, the King of saints.

In Revelation chapter 15:1, we are told that John saw seven angels with the last seven plagues in the sky.  Then in verse 2, John saw what looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire and standing beside the sea, those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and over the number of his name.  They held harps given by God and sang the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb.

Although we are told that the seven angels are in the sky, we are not told where the saints are, other than they are standing by what looks like a sea of glass mixed with fire.  These saints are in fact not in the sky with the angels, but are within the world of the dead in that place Jesus Christ calls paradise.  This becomes clearer as we read on.

Revelation 15:5 And after that I looked, and, saw, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in the sky was opened: 6 And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles. 7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God, who lives forever and ever. 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.

From verse 1 to 5, the seven angels are in the temple.  As the angels leave the temple, the temple is filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power so that no one could enter the temple.  As there is no mention of the saints leaving the temple with the angels, we can safely say that the angels and the saints are not in the same place.  John by the Spirit of Christ is seeing into two places at the same time.  It’s as if, John has on eye focused on the angels in the sky and the other eye on the saints in Sheol/paradise.

How do we know that the saints are definitely not in the sky, before the angels pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath?  Because between the pouring out of the sixth and seventh bowls of God’s wrath, we (the saints who are still on earth) are given a reminder that when Jesus Christ comes, he will come as a thief, to those who are not expecting and watching for his coming.  According to God’s word (1 Corinthians 15:23), the saints, those who are in Christ, will not be resurrected from the dead, until the coming of Jesus Christ.

Therefore if there are still Christians on earth during the outpouring of the sixth bowl of wrath, there are no saints in the sky (other than the 24 elders) when the angels first receive the seven bowls of God’s wrath.

Revelation 16:1 Then I heard a loud voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God upon the earth. 2 And the first went, and poured out his bowl upon the earth; and there fell a harmful and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and worshipped his image.

The powers in control of the world banking systems are currently working on a new system to replace both the cash and the plastic credit cards.  It is being planned, that everyone will have to have a microchip, with their number, inserted under the skin on their forehead or right hand.

God’s word tells us that he, meaning the anti-christ, the ruler of the end time world empire, will force everyone to receive a mark on his right hand or forehead.  As the Greek word for hand covers the whole arm from the elbow to the fingers, it is possible that this microchip will be inserted into the wrist.  Although the world empire will only extend from Britain to Iraq, it is very possible that The World Bank will introduce this banking system worldwide, during the time of the seven-year covenant.

Revelation 13:16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no man can buy or sell except he who has the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

It is possible, that every time we buy or sell, this number will be read by an infra-red light. After this cashless and card less system has been in use for some time, those who have been regularly exposed to this infra-red light will receive painful cancerous sores that will not heal.  Also with most of the world,s doctors now having their right hand rendered useless by cancer, there will be a worldwide shortage of doctors.  But Christians need not fear, because God is their healer.

Revelation 16:3 Then the second angel poured out his bowl upon the sea; and it became as the blood of the dead: and every living soul in the sea died. 4 And the third angel poured out his bowl upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.

The second bowl is poured out during the time of the second trumpet, and the third bowl is poured out during the time of the third trumpet.  Both are poured out during the time of the fourth seal. Also because during this time, the rivers and the springs of water become blood, we know the two witnesses are operating at this time

Revelation 16:8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which has power over these plagues: and they did not repent and give him glory.

Revelation 16:10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl upon the throne of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they bit their tongues for pain, 11 and blasphemed the God of the sky because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

When the fifth angel pours out his bowl, the kingdom of the beast becomes full of darkness.  Because we know the sun will only be darkened once during the last ten-and-a-half-years, we also know that the fifth bowl is poured out during the time of the sixth seal, and during the time of the fifth trumpet.

Revelation 16:12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl upon the great river Euphrates; and its waters were dried up, that the way might be prepared for the kings of the east. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

It is during the sounding of the sixth trumpet that the sixth bowl of God’s wrath is poured out.

With the sounding of the sixth trumpet, the four angels bound at the great river Euphrates are released.  These four angels convince the kings of the East to raise an army of two-hundred million, to make war for one year, one month, one day and one hour.  With the pouring out of the sixth bowl of wrath, the great Euphrates is dried up to prepare the way for the kings of the East and their large army.  After destroying Babylon, this large army will meet up with the other armies of the world on the great day of God Almighty.

Before that great day of God (the day of the battle of Armageddon), we are once again reminded that when the Lord Jesus Christ comes, he will come to those who are not expecting him, as a thief in the night.  But those who are expecting him, and watch for his coming will be blessed.

Revelation 16:15 Look see, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. 17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple in the sky, from the throne, saying, it is done. 18 And there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth. So mighty an earthquake, and so great, 19 the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. 20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.  21 And there fell out of the sky upon men, great hail stones about the weight of a talent (forty kilograms or eighty pounds): and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.                                                                                                                     (Words in italics added.)

After the reminder that the Lord is still coming, and after the battle of Armageddon there is a severe earthquake, unlike any other earthquake the world has ever known.  Every city in the world is destroyed, every island flees away and every mountain is brought low.  Then huge hailstones fall from the sky upon mankind.  This is the same earthquake and hailstorm, referred to during the sounding of the seventh trumpet. (Rev. 11:19)

In Isaiah chapter 40, this is what God has to say of this day.

Isaiah 40:3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness; prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill made low, the crooked places shall be made straight and the rough places smooth. 5 The glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and together all flesh shall see it; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

After every valley is exalted and every mountain and hill is brought low by this great earthquake, the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall together see the glory of the Lord.

In the next chapter, we will focus on the glory of the Lord that will be revealed to all flesh, on that great and terrible Day of the Lord.  For the righteous this will be a great day, a day full of joy and excitement, but for the unrighteous this shall be a terrible day, a day full of fear, pain, sorrow and grief.

21. THE GLORY OF THE LORD.

For forty years the Children of Israel, wandered in the wilderness.  Throughout this time, God revealed his presence to his children by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, and from the mist of the pillar of cloud and fire, came the spoken Word of God.

Exodus 13:21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, to go by day and night. 22 He took not away the pillar of cloud by day, or the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

So God was always present, before his people in the cloud and fire.

Although verse 21 tells us that ‘the Lord’ (meaning God) went before them in cloud and fire.  Chapter 14 verse 19, then tells us that “the Angel of God” went before them in the cloud and the fire.  As most Christian Bible scholars believe that the Angel of God is a manifestation of Jesus Christ, we can say that both God the Father and God the Son were present in the cloud and fire.

Then in verse 20, we see this pillar of cloud coming between the Egyptians and the Israelites, bring darkness to the Egyptians and light to the Israelites.  So clearly the cloud and the fire are one.

alt

Exodus 14:19 And the Angel of God, who went before the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them, and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them. 20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. It was a cloud and darkness to one but it gave light by night to the other, so that the one came not near the other all the night.

Numbers chapter 9 verses 15 & 16 show even more clearly that the cloud and the fire are one.

Numbers 9:15 Now on the day that the tabernacle was raised up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the Testimony; from evening until morning it was above the tabernacle like the appearance of fire. 16 So it was always: the cloud covered it by day, and the appearance of fire by night.

This is the same cloud and fire that came down upon Mount Sinai, when the Lord descended on it in fire, and from out of that cloud and fire, came the Word of God.  When we read about this in Exodus chapter 24, we see that the cloud and the glory of God are the same thing.  For it tells us that the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire, and from out of the midst of the cloud, God called Moses.

Exodus 24:15 Then Moses went up into the mountain, and a cloud covered the mountain. 16 And the glory of the LORD rested upon Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. On the seventh day he called unto Moses from out of the midst of the cloud. 17 The sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.

Deuteronomy chapter 5 verse 24 says of the appearance of God’s glory on Mount Sinai.

“And you said: 'Surely the LORD our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice from the midst of the fire. We have seen this day that God speaks with man; yet he still lives.”

Deuteronomy 5:24 And you said, Look and see, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. We have seen this day that God does talk with man, and he still lives.

On Mount Sinai that day, God appeared in fire and cloud revealing his greatness and his glory to mankind.

At the dedication of King Solomon’s temple, God again revealed his Glory and his presence by cloud and fire.  In Kings Chapter 8 Verse 10, it says that the cloud filled the house of the Lord.  Then in Verse 11, it says that the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.  So the cloud and the glory are one.

I Kings 8:10 And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD, 11 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.

The following is another account of the dedication of Solomon’s temple.

II Chronicles 7:1 Now when Solomon had finished praying, the fire came down from the sky, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house. 2 And the priests could not enter into the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORD'S house. 3 And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down and the glory of the LORD upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endures forever.

In the Old Testament, when God revealed himself, it was usually in a cloud that looked like fire.  Moses could walk into this fire, as he did at Mount Sinai, and he was not harmed.  Yet at other times, fire came from the Lord and consumed men who had sinned against God (Numbers 16:35).  So the righteous can enter into the glory of God (the cloud and fire) and they will not be harmed, but sinners are consumed by the presence of God.

In Psalm 68, king David describes God arising, his enemies scattering and fleeing before him, then perishing as wax melts before a fire.  To the wicked, God comes like fire to destroy them, while to the righteous God comes riding on the clouds.  David is not having a vision of God coming, riding on rain clouds here.  No!  He is having a vision of God coming to us riding in cloud of his glory, which looks like cloud and fire.

Psalm 68:1 Let God arise let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.  2 As smoke is driven away, so drive them away: as wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God. 3 But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yes, let them exceedingly rejoice. 4 Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rides upon the sky by his name JAH, and rejoice before him.

Keeping in mind that the cloud of God’s glory was not fire, but looked like fire, and fire came from out of his presence and destroyed his enemies.  Let us have a look at 2 Kings 6:17, where the armies of God are described as horses and chariots of fire.  Not that the armies of God are horses and chariots of fire, but the prophet Elisha is trying to describe what he is seeing, and what he is seeing is beyond our comprehension.

II Kings 6:17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see. Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountains were full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

Let us now go to 2 Kings 2:11 – 12.  Here Elisha is describing what it looked like to him, when God descended from the sky in the glory cloud of his presence and took Elijah up into the sky.

II Kings 2:11 And it came to pass, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire with horses of fire, appeared between the two of them, and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into the sky. 12 Elisha seeing it cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

When Jesus Christ was on the earth in the flesh, he met with Moses and Elijah, high up a mountain.  Jesus was speaking with Moses and Elijah.  Then Peter spoke,

Matthew 17:5 While he was still speaking, suddenly, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear him!”

This was no ordinary cloud it was the glory cloud and fire of God’s presence.  Then in Acts we are told when Jesus Christ ascended to the sky a cloud received Him.

Matthew 17:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they were looking, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

Acts 1:9 And when He had spoken these things, while they were watched, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward the sky as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, You men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into the sky? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into the sky, shall also come in like manner as you saw him go into the sky.”

How was Jesus Christ taken up into the sky?  He was taken up in the glory cloud of God’s presence, and when Jesus returns, He will return in the glory cloud of God’s presence.

This is how Jesus Christ Himself, describes His second coming.

Matthew 24:30 Then shall the sign of the Son of man appear in the sky: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.

Revelation 1:7 Look, he comes with clouds, and every eye will see him, even they who pierced him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him. Even so, amen.

How will those who pierced Jesus (nailed him to the cross) see him?  I believe that as the young Church began to grow, these Roman soldiers, who nailed Jesus to the cross, were amongst the first to believe and received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer.  Therefore when the Lord comes in his glory with his angels, they will be raised from the dead and they shall see him with their own eyes.

In writing to the Thessalonians, Paul says:

1Thessalonians 4:17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

While in 2 Thessalonians 1:7, he tells us that God will not give us rest from those who trouble us, until Jesus Christ is revealed from the sky with His angels in flaming fire.  In 1 Thessalonians chapter four, Paul simply refers to the cloud of God’s glory as clouds.  But the in 2 Thessalonians chapter one, Paul refers to God’s glory as flaming fire. Why is this so?

Because in 1 Thessalonians chapter four, Paul is talking about the Christians being caught up into the cloud of God’s glory.  To us being caught up, God’s glory will look like a very white, very bright cloud.  Then surrounded by angels and the cloud of God’s glory, we will meet with Jesus Christ as he returns to earth, the same way he was taken up 2,000 years ago.

But in 2 Thessalonians, chapter one, Paul tells us how the coming of Jesus Christ will look to the wicked who have been troubling the Christians.  They will see Jesus Christ descending from the sky in the bright white cloud of God’s glory.  Then from out of the cloud will come consuming fire, taking vengeance on those who do not know God.

Let us look a bit more closely at 2 Thessalonians chapter one.

II Thessalonians 1:3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters, as it is fitting, because that your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all toward each other abounds. 4 So that we ourselves boast of you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure:

Both in Matthew chapter 13 verse 21 and John chapter 16 verse 33, Jesus Christ makes it very clear that we who believe the Word of God and receive it into our hearts will also receive persecutions and tribulations because of the Word.

Paul boasts of the Thessalonians’ patience and faith in all their persecutions and tribulations that they endure.  In other words, they have great faith in God who sustains them through these persecutions and tribulations. They also have great patience to endure these persecutions and tribulations; persecutions and tribulations that God does not seem to be in a hurry to take away.

Why?  Because persecutions and tribulations are good for us.  Peter writes:

1 Peter 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, you are distressed by various trials, 7 that the testing of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it be tried by fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ,

Jesus Christ our bridegroom is coming for a bride without spot or wrinkle.  For this reason, we the Church need to be grieved by various trials

II Thessalonians 1:4 So that we ourselves boast of you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure. 5 Which is evidence of the righteous judgment of God that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer. 6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to repay tribulation to them that trouble you; 7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from the sky with his mighty angels, 8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ; 9 who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; 10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

According to this passage, we the Church of Jesus Christ will not receive rest from our persecutions and tribulations until the day Jesus Christ is revealed from the sky with his angels in flaming fire.  On that same day, to those who troubled us, God will repay them with tribulation.  We, the Church of Jesus Christ, will enter into rest on the day that God pours his wrath out upon the wicked and destroys them with fire.

It will only take an hour for God to remove the wicked from the face of the earth with fire.  We, the Church who have persevered (patiently endured) through these persecutions and tribulations have been promised by Jesus Christ, that He will keep us from that hour of trail.

Revelation 3:10 Because you have kept my command to endure, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. 11 Look, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no man may take your crown.

22. THE TIMES.

Throughout this book, we have already looked at the times in some detail.  So this is just a brief summary of the times, to help explain the chart below.

The Days of Vengeance.

The days of vengeance refers to the time of God’s vengeance against the Jews, for their rejection of his Son Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer.  This time began with the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. and will end approximately 541 days before the return of Jesus Christ.

The Times of The Gentiles.

This is a time when many Gentiles receive deliverance, and are born again into the kingdom of God. While at the same time very few Jews will receive deliverance.  This time also begins with the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. and will end approximately 541 days before the return of Jesus Christ.

The Time of Great Distress.

Also known as the great tribulation; this time will begin with the occupation of Jerusalem by the forces of the World Empire and the setting up of the abomination in the Holy place.  Three-and-a-half-years later, with the ending of the occupation of Judea, the tribulation in Jerusalem and Judea will come to an end.

For the Church, this will be a time of God dividing the wheat from the weeds, a time testing the faith of the believers, and a time when many souls will be saved.  Although this time of Great distress will end three-and-a-half-years after it began, the believers in Christ throughout the world will continue to suffer trials and persecutions till the end, as we have always suffered since the beginning of the Church.

John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, that in me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."

The Time of Wrath.

The time of wrath begins three-and-a-half-years after the setting up of the abomination in the Holy Place, and will last for three-and-a-half-years.  For the first two years of this time of wrath, God will make no difference between the believers and the non-believers and the plagues will fall on both alike.  However, before the really bad plagues come upon mankind, God will make a difference between the believers and the non-believers.  So that, for the next year-and-a-half, the plagues will only fall on those who are not marked in Christ with the seal of the Holy Spirit.

The Last Day.

The Last Day for the righteous will be a day of great joy, ending with the righteous being caught up to meet Jesus Christ in the air. But for the unrighteous this will be a day of great terror, ending with the Hour of Wrath, an hour in which all the wicked will be removed from the face of the earth, and shall become as ash under the feet of the righteous.

23. HOW TO RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR LORD AND DELIVERER.

Today you have heard the good news.  Now the choice is yours to make.  You can either choose to believe and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Deliverer, or you can choose to reject Jesus Christ.  To accept Jesus, is deliverance to your soul.  To reject Jesus, is damnation to your soul.

If your choice is yes, I believe and I want to repent and accept Jesus as my Lord and Deliverer, then I invite you to find a Bible believing church that preaches the good news and baptizes those who believe and repent.  When you have found such a church, ask them to baptize you (Dunk you under the water) in the name of Jesus Christ for the casting away of your sins and to ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit.

Then you will be delivered from the powers of darkness and you will be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Attend a Christian church regularly, make friends with other Christians and they will help you in your Christian walk.  Share your love of Jesus with your non-Christian friends and family.  Read God’s Word the Bible daily and apply it to your life.  Pray every day; to pray is to talk with God your Father, who loves you very much.  He wants to talk with you and listen to you.  Do these things and you will grow strong in the Lord Jesus Christ.

May God bless you and keep you.

From your friend and brother in Christ,

Ken Clark.
