The Last 10 and a half Years - 8. The Last Day.

(Suggested reading, Daniel 11:25 – 12:13 & John 6:35 – 40)

From the time of the prophet Daniel, until the time of Jesus Christ resurrection, the Old Testament saints clearly believed that they would be resurrected at the Last Day; also known as the resurrection at the End of Days.  This truth comes through loud and clear in Jesus Christ’s conversation with Martha, after her Brother Lazarus’ death

John 11:23 Jesus said unto her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24 Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”

Martha and the Old Testament saints had learnt about the resurrection at the Last Day through the writings of Daniel.

In Daniel chapter 11, is written the account of the war between the king of the North and the king of the South.  Verse 2 to verse 28, of this prophecy has already been fulfilled (during the time of the Ptolemies and the Seleucids) and is now history.  Between verses 28 and 29, there is a breach of over 2,000 years.  While verses 29 to 45 is prophecy, which is still to be fulfilled.  Then Daniel chapter 12, gives us another look at this time of unfulfilled prophecy and on till the End of Days.

Daniel chapter 11, verse 31 & 36 has this to say about the king of the North.

Daniel 11:31 “Armed forces shall stand on his behalf, they shall defile the sanctuary of strength, and then they shall take away the daily sacrifice, and place there the abomination that makes desolate.”

Daniel 11:36 “Then the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished: for what is determined shall be done.”

The king of the North (the anti-christ) is God’s instrument of wrath against the Jews, in order to bring them to repentance and the acceptance of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer.  For God is determined that he shall save his people, as he promised.  The king of the North’s invasion and occupation of Israel brings great trouble upon the Jews, known as the great tribulation.  Daniel chapter 12, tells us of the deliverance God brings to his people from that time of trouble.

Daniel 12:1 “At that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands for the sons of your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone that shall found written in the book. 2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt.”

In Daniel 12:1, Daniel writes:

There shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time.”

In Matthew 24:21 – 22, Jesus Christ says of this time:

Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 Unless except those days should be shortened, there no flesh shall be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

There will be a time of great tribulation (a time of trouble).  But at that time everyone, whose name is found written in the Book of Life, will be delivered.  This deliverance of everyone whose name is found written in the Book of Life will not only include the living, but also the saints who have died and whose bodies sleep in the dust of the earth.  They will awake to everlasting life.  In other words, they will be raised from the dead.

Daniel having been told of this resurrection day, of all those whose names are written in the book of life, is then (at the end of chapter 12) told that his own resurrection will be at the end of a given number of days, counting from the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up.

Daniel12:11 “And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there shall be one thousand two hundred and ninety days. 12 Blessed is he who waits, and comes to the one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days.”

When we compare Daniel 11:31 with Daniel 9:27, we see that the king of the North first confirms a seven-year covenant with many.  Then in the middle of that seven-year covenant, he puts an end to the sacrifice and offerings, and sets up the ‘abomination that causes desolation’.

Daniel 9:27a Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; and in the middle of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and offering to cease - - - - -

From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished, in the middle of the seven-year covenant, there will be 1,290 days until the end of the covenant.  But the saints will have to wait a further 1,335 days until they are blessed.  1,290 + 1,335 = 2,625 days.  Or in lunar years: seven-years, three-months, and five-days.

Having been told of this period of 2,625 days.  Daniel is then told,

Daniel 12:13 “But you, go your way till the end; for you shall rest, and will arise to your inheritance at the end of the days.”

This same verse paraphrased:

“But you Daniel, go and live your life till its end.  Your body will die and be laid to rest in the dust of the earth.  And you will be raised from the dead to receive your inheritance at the End of the Days.”

If we take it, that Daniel is included among those who have their names written in the Book of Life.  Then everyone whose name is written in the Book of Life will also be raised from the dead at the End of Days.

Just as the saints from the time of Daniel to Jesus Christ believed that they would be resurrected to everlasting life at the End of Days (the Last Day). Jesus Christ also taught all who came to him, will be raised up at the Last Day (the End of Days).

So according to the writings of Daniel, his people (the children of Israel), everyone whose name is written in the Book, will be resurrected at the Last Day.  And according to the teachings of Jesus Christ, everyone who sees the Son and believes in him (that is all born again Christians) will also be resurrected at the Last Day.

From the date that the king of the North makes a seven-year covenant with many, there will be 1,230 days until he reveals himself as the anti-christ, by setting up the “abomination that causes desolation” in the Holy place (2 Thessalonians 2:3).  Then there will be 1,290 days until the end of the covenant, followed by another 1,335 days till the resurrection at the End of Days.  Therefore, from the beginning of the seven-year covenant until the End of Days, there shall be 3,855 days, a period of 10 years and 8 months.

However according to Jesus Christ, this time will be cut short for the sake of the elect (Matthew 24:22).  When we compare the writings of Daniel, to the book of Revelation we discover that all three periods of time have been rounded off to 1,260 days each, reducing the overall period time from 10 years and 8 months, to 10 years and six months.

Note on the beast and the anti-christ.

In the book of Daniel, the Bible uses the term beast to refer to world empires and those who rule over world empires.  Any world empire is a beast, and any ruler who is the head of any such empire is also called a beast.

The beast that rises up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, is both the ancient Roman Empire and the end time World Empire, which rises up out of what was once the Roman Empire. (Revelation 13:13)

The anti-christ is the man who rules over this end time World Empire.  He is the head of the beast and the people of the empire are the body of the beast.

There is more than one beast.  For example, Daniel 7 tells us of three other beasts that come before the fourth beast, and God allows these other three beasts to continue, after the destruction of the fourth beast.
