9. GOG AND HIS ALLIES ATTACK ISRAEL.
Part 2 Ezekiel chapter 39
Ezekiel 39:1 Therefore, you son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, This says the Lord GOD; Look and see, I am against you, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: 2 I will turn you back, and leave but a sixth part of you; I will cause you to come up from the far north, and will bring you upon the mountains of Israel: 3 Then I will knock your bow out of your left hand, and will cause your arrows to fall out of your right hand. 4 You shall fall upon the mountains of Israel, you, and all your bands, and the troops that are with you: I will give you unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. 5 You shall fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, says the Lord GOD. 6 And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell without a care in the islands and coast lands: and they shall know that I am the LORD. 7 So will I make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel; and I will not let them pollute My holy name any more: and the nations shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel. 8 Look and see, it is come, and it is done, says the Lord GOD; this is the day of which I have spoken.
Ezekiel chapter 39 verses 1 to 8 give us another view of the armies of Gog coming from the far north to the mountains of Israel, where God will defeat and destroy all but a sixth part of them.
Ezekiel 39:9 Then they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the hand staves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years: 10 So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut any down out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, says the Lord GOD.
Dr Chuck Missler, as suggest that verses 9 to 10 point to the possibility of this army using nuclear powered weapons. The energy from such weapons could be used to power Israel economy for many years. This would also explain why, in verses 11 to 16, so much detail is given in describing the removal and disposal of the dead bodies.
Others suggestions include; 1: The Children of Israel will consider the land to be ceremonially unclean as long as dead bodies remained unburied in the land. 2: Natural pollution and the fear of deceases would drive them to bury the dead as quick as possible, and as the bodies began to decay and the danger of the workers catching deceases increased, only specially trained and equipped workers would be allowed to continue with this work.
Maybe the truth is a combination of many reasons.
Ezekiel 39:11 “It will come to pass in that day that I will give Gog a burial place there in Israel, the valley of those who pass by east of the sea; and it will obstruct travellers, because there they will bury Gog and all his multitude. Therefore they will call it the Valley of the Multitude of Gog. 12 For seven months the house of Israel will burying them, in order to cleanse the land. 13 Indeed all the people of the land will gain renown for it on the day that I am glorified,” says the Lord God. 14 “They will set apart men regularly employed, with the help of a search party, to pass through the land and bury those bodies remaining on the ground, in order to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will make a search. 15 The search party will pass through the land: and when anyone sees a man’s bone, he shall set up a marker by it, till the buriers have buried it in the Valley of the Multitude of Gog. 16 The name of the city will also be Multitude. Thus they shall cleans the land
Ezekiel 39:17 This says the Lord GOD; You son of man, say unto every feathered bird, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to My sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that you may eat flesh, and drink blood. 18 You shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan. 19 And you shall eat fat till you are full, and drink blood till you are drunk from my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you. 20 Thus you shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, says the Lord GOD.
While not disputing the possibility of many of these bodies may be highly contaminated in some way. The fact that they had to bury the dead does help us rule out the possibility of this Battle being either the Battle of Armageddon, or the Battle that comes at the end of the 1,000 year reign of Jesus Christ on earth.
The Battle of Armageddon can be ruled out;
1: Because the Battle of Armageddon will be fought on The Great Plain of Megiddo, while the armies of Gog will be destroyed upon the mountains of Israel.
2: The Battle of Armageddon will take place on the great and terrible Day of the Lord, which is also the day of the first resurrection. On this day, all righteous dead will be raised back to life, while the wicked will be consumed by fire, to become ash under the feet of the righteous. Thus after the Battle of Armageddon, there will be no dead bodies to bury.
The Battle that comes after the end of the 1,000 year reign of Jesus Christ can also be ruled out, because at the end of the 1,000 years all the dead, who were not part of the first resurrection, shall be raised from the dead. Therefore after this battle, there also will be no dead bodies to bury.
Then in verses 17 to 20 we have God calling the birds of the air and the beast of the field to gather together for God’s sacrificial meal on the mountains of Israel.
It was because God’s people both rejected and rebelled against God, that God scattered them among the nations. First the Assyrians came and scattered those who dwelt in the Northern Kingdom of Israel; then came the Babylonians and took many of the Children of Judah captive to Babylon. Latter after the Jews had returned from Babylon to Jerusalem, the Jews through their rejection of Jesus Christ as their Lord and Deliverer again both rejected and rebelled against God. Therefore God sent the Romans to scattered the Jews amongst the nations. Since 1948 we have once again seen the return of the Jews to Jerusalem, but the final rebellion of the Jews against God is still too come. God, through Paul tells of this coming rebellion in 2 Thessalonians 2:1; after which God will once again scatter His people, the Jews amongst nations, with many being taken captive to Babylon. But after God has judged the nations by destroying their armies, the multitude of Gog, on the mountains of Israel, the Children of Israel and the Children of Judah will repent and once again they will know their God. Then God will bring all His people back to the Promise Land.
2 Thessalonians 2:1 Now brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our being gathered together unto him, we ask 2 that you not be so quickly shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come except there first comes a falling away, and that man of sin is revealed, the son of damnation; 4 Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.
The N.I.V. translates verse 3 as; don’t let anyone deceive you in anyway, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
It is the Jews who will rebel against God in the last days. Because of this rebellion God will hand over the Jews to the forces of the beast. The beast will occupy Jerusalem, place the abomination that causes desolation in the temple, then the beast himself shall sit in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. Jesus Christ says, when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place Then let them which are in Judea flee into the mountains: For then there shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be (Matthew 23:15,16 & 21).
God through Zechariah, also tells us of this day when the forces of the beast occupy Jerusalem.
We should keep it in mind that when Zechariah heard the word of the Lord, it was after the captives had returned from Babylon to Jerusalem, in 522 B.C.; Therefore when Zechariah heard this prophecy, God was not talking about the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians in 587 B.C. but of a coming future destruction of Jerusalem.
Zechariah 14:1 Look, the day of the LORD comes, and your spoil shall be divided in your midst. 2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
At this time many Jews will flee and scatter among the nations, and Jerusalem will be occupied by the forces of the beast for 3½ years. Of those Jews who remain, half shall go forth into captivity, most to Babylon, while other half shall not be cut off from the city, but shall suffer 3½ years of great tribulation. After the forces of the beast pull out of Jerusalem and Judea, the Jews will enjoy approximately two years of self rule, until the armies of Gog and the armies of the beast unite and again invade Judah; there upon the mountains of Judah God will send fire on Magog.
Ezekiel 39:6 And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell without a care in the islands and coast lands: and they shall know that I am the LORD. 7 So will I make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel; and I will not let them pollute My holy name any more: and the nations shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
Ezekiel 39:21 I will set My glory among the nations; all the nations shall see My judgement which I have executed, and My hand which I have laid on them. 22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that Day forward.
Ezekiel chapter 39 verses 6 – 7 and verses 21 – 22 are both looking at the same day, the day that God brings judgement by fire upon Magog and the nations that joined with Gog to invade Judah and occupy Jerusalem.
God says I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell without a care in the islands and coast lands (v 6). Magog is Russia, the islands and coast lands are the islands and the coast lands of the Mediterranean Sea. When the combined armies of Gog and the beast attacked Judah, the people who dwelt in Russia, in the Islands and the coast lands, were so sure the army of Judah would be completely destroyed in a day or two at the most; they did not have a care.
However; they did not know that the fire of God was about to come upon them.
God says; I will set My glory among the nations; all the nations shall see My judgement which I have executed, and My hand which I have laid on them (v 21).
The Hebrew word, here translated as glory, is the same Hebrew word used by Moses throughout his writings to describe the glory cloud, the cloud and fire of God’s presence that accompanied and stayed with the Children of Israel for forty years in the wilderness, and fire came from the glory of God and destroyed His enemies (Numbers 16). So when God says He will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell without a care in the islands and coast lands (v 6), it is in total agreement with when God says I will set My glory among the nations; all the nations shall see My judgement which I have executed, and My hand which I have laid on them (v 21).
Ezekiel 39:22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that Day forward.
The house of Israel does not yet know and understand that God the Father and God the Son and God the Holy Spirit are truly One God. They do not understand that in rejecting God the Son, they also rejected God the Father and separated themselves from God. But when they see the fire of God, in one day destroy the armies of the word and bring judgement upon the nations, the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that Day forward.
Ezekiel 39:23 And the nations shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword. 24 According to their spiritual uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
25 Therefore this says the Lord GOD; Now will I bring back Jacob from the captivity, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for My holy name; 26 After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and nothing made them afraid. 27 When I have brought them back from the nations, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am spiritually cleansed in them in the sight of many nations; 28 Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the nations: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them there anymore. 29 Neither will I hide My face anymore from them: for I have poured out My Spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord GOD.
After the defeat of the army of Gog, God with bring back the captives. Only then does God say “For I have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel.” Yes God poured out His Spirit upon the Jews on the Day of Pentecost. But that was only a part fulfilment of this prophecy and of the prophecy recorded in Joel 2:28 in which God says He will pour His Spirit out on all flesh. For on the Day of Pentecost only 3,000 Jews were filled with the Holy Spirit. In a Day yet to come; when?
After the destruction of the armies of Gog; these prophecies concerning the outpouring of the Holy Spirit will be fulfilled on a day when 144,000 both the Children of Judah and the Children of Israel, 12,000 from every tribe shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
How does one receive the gift of the Holy Spirit? According to God’s word this is how we receive the Holy Spirit, and how 3,000 Jews received the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
When we go on to study the book of Joel, we will find the order of events prophesied in Ezekiel chapters 38 & 39 are very similar to the order of events prophesied in Joel chapters 2 & 3. So similar that there is no doubt in my mind that both Ezekiel and Joel are prophesying about the same things,
First there is a return of both a number of the Children of Israel and the Children of Judah to the Promised Land.
Second: The armies of the world invade Judah, where they are destroyed by the power of God.
Third: As God pours out His Spirit, a wave of repentance comes upon both the Children of Israel and the Children of Judah.
Fourth: There is great return of return to the Promised Land of both the Children of Israel and the Children of Judah from all over the world.
