8. GOG AND HIS ALLIES ATTACK ISRAEL.
Part 1 Ezekiel chapter 38.
Suggested readings Ezekiel chapters 38 & 39, and the book of Joel.
In a time yet to come ten kings from what was once the Roman Empire will make a covenant with a coming world leader and raising him up as the supreme ruler over the empire for the next seven years. In the Bible, both this empire and this ruler are sometimes called the beast.
After the seven-year covenant, the beast refuses to give up his power and authority over the empire. So the nations in the South West of Europe break away from the Empire of the Beast to form the Southern European Alliance. The Southern European Alliance looks east to China and India as possible Allies in a future war against the beast. In the meantime the beast looks to Russia and The Northern European Alliance as possible Allies. With the forming of this alliance, Russia supplies The Northern Alliance and the forces of the beast with the latest in fighter aircraft, tanks and guns, in preparation for a joint assault against Judea.
In Ezekiel 38:1 - 3 we find Gog, of the Land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. The Land of Magog is what we currently call Russia. So Gog is the ruler of Russia, and from the north with Gog come the rulers of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. The rulers of Meshech, and Tubal, are rulers of Turkey. (Verse 5) Also coming against Israel at this time we have Persia (that is modern day Iran), Ethiopia, and Libya. (Verse 6) and Gomer and all his troops, plus Togaramah (a son of Gomer) and all his troops shall come with Gog. The descendants of Gomer settled in Northern Europe (that is The Independent Northern European Nations). These troops come from the far north, and join with Gog of Russia to invade Israel.
Ezekiel 38:1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him, 3 and say, ‘This says the Lord GOD: “Look and see, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Meshech and Tubal. 4 I will turn you back, and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you forth, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all clothed splendidly, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. 5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all its hordes; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its hordes, and many troops are with you.
Ezekiel 38:7 “Be ready, and prepare yourself, and all your companies that are assembled unto you, and be you a guard unto them.”
“Be ready, and prepare yourself.”
After the collapse of the USSR in the 1980s, Russia was anything but ready to get involved in a modern war, against a well-armed enemy with the latest fighter aircraft, tanks and guns. With the collapse of the Russian economy, over the next two decades the USA at first pulled ahead of Russia in the development of military equipment. Then with the recovery of the Russian economy in the early 21st century, the Russians for the first time since 1945 are beginning to pull ahead of the USA in the development of newer and better submarines, aircraft and tanks. Russia is preparing herself and she shall be ready.
“Be ready, and prepare yourself, and all your companies that are assembled unto you, and be you a guard unto them.”
Russia is not just instructed to prepare herself, but also those companies that are assembled unto her. Despite the collapse of the USSR, the former nations of the USSR, the Ukraine, Poland, Germany and the Baltic States are still very much reliant on Russia for much of their fuel supplies. The European Common Market will collapse, if for no other reason, the nations of Northern Europe strongest trade links are not to the south but east to Russia. The European Common Market has promised much to countries of the former USSR, but will fail to deliver. Therefore the nations of the former USSR will once again form strong trade and military ties with Russia. Russia shall not only prepare and make herself ready for war; she shall also prepare the nations of Northern Europe for war. These nations will assemble unto Russia, and Russia will be a guard for them.
Ezekiel 38:8 “After many days you will be appointed. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many nations on the mountains of Israel which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely. 9 “You will ascend, coming like a storm, covering the land like a cloud, you and all your hordes and many troops with you.”

How can I bring you understanding of verses 8 & 9? When Jesus was with us He taught in parables, much of God’s word is written in type pictures and parables. In the parable of the tares and the wheat (Matt 13:24 – 43), the wheat is likened to the sons of the kingdom, and the tares to the sons of the wicked one. For a moment think of the land of Israel and Judah as the field. Growing in this field are the sons of the kingdom. Then an enemy comes. First the Assyrians come take the wheat (the sons of the kingdom) away from Israel; then scatter tares (the sons of the wicked one) into the land of Israel. After the Assyrians, the Babylonians came and took the wheat from Judah away into the captivity of Babylon. Then the Babylonians scatter tares, (the sons of the wicked one) into the land of Judah.
So the land of Israel and Judah are both doubly desolate. They are desolate because the Assyrians and the Babylonians have destroyed their buildings. They are desolate, because wheat (the Children of Israel and the Children of Judah) have been taken away, and the land has been sown with tares, as many people from around the world are transported into Israel and Judah. Many Bible prophecies and visions tell of this desolation of Israel and Judah, and of the latter return of both the Children of Israel and the Children of Judah, along with the rebuilding of the former desolations.
Are these prophecies speaking to us of Israel and Judah’s desolation at the hands of the Assyrians and the Babylonians, or are these prophecies looking forward to a future desolation of Israel and Judah. For in a time yet to come, during the second half of the seven-year covenant the forces of the beast will occupy of Judah and Jerusalem. Then once again many Jews (the wheat) will be taken captive to Babylon, while many Palestinians (the tares) will flood back into Judah and Jerusalem to take their place.
Yes, many now look back and say these prophecies concerning the returning God’s people as Holy seed and the rebuilding of the former desolations, have already been fulfilled. But No! They have only been fulfilled in part, as a type picture of the final fulfillment that is still to come.
The following points are some of the reasons why I say they have only been fulfilled in part, and the full fulfillment is still to come.
• The sons of the wicked one (the tares) are still in the land. As long as they remain, the land of Israel and Judah, the land is still suffering spiritual desolation.
• Most of the prophecies concerning the return of God’s people refer to the return of both the Children of Israel and the Children of Judah. Yes we may have seen a return of the Children of Judah from Babylon in the 6th century BC, and more recently from 1945 on we have again seen the return of the Children Judah, but as yet we have not seen a return of the Children of Israel. That is we have not yet seen a return those who ancestors were once part of the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
• All the prophecies concerning the desolation of Israel, Judah and Jerusalem, at the hands of the Assyrians and the Babylonians, have a breach period. They tell us what happen up to time of Judah’s captivity in Babylon, then they enter into a breach period, a period of time of which the prophecy usually does not inform us of anything at all. The breach period of these prophecies will not end before the beast signs the seven-year covenant.
• Most of the prophecies concerning the first and second comings of Jesus Christ have a breach period which started after the first coming, and will end with the signing of the seven-year covenant. Also some of the prophecies concerning the future fall Babylon have a breach period starting from the time Cyrus arrives at the gates of Babylon in 539 BC and ending shortly before the fall of Babylon, an event that will not happen till after the seven-year covenant.
• When that seven-year covenant is signed, we have entered into the latter years. A ten-and-a-half-year period of time in which all the prophecies concerning the return of both the Children of Judah and Children of Israel, and the prophecies concerning the second coming of Jesus Christ shall be fulfilled in full.

Ezekiel 38:8 “After many days you will be appointed. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many nations on the mountains of Israel which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely.
After many days, after a long time, you Gog of the Land of Magog will be appointed, in the latter years. Meaning, during those ten-and-a-half-years that come after the signing of the seven-year covenant and before the resurrection at the end of days. You, being the armies of Russia and her allies will come into the land of those brought back from sword.
The children of Israel and Judah were taken away from their land by the sword. In a time yet to come they shall be brought back into their land from the captivity of the sword. They shall be gathered from many nations from around the world. Gathered to where? To the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. The Children of Israel and the Children of Judah will be brought out of the nations, and they shall all of them dwell safely on the mountains of Israel.
Ezekiel 38:9 “You will ascend, coming like a storm, covering the land like a cloud, you and all your hordes and many troops with you.”
The armies of Russia, the Northern Alliance and of the Beast will ascend upon the mountains of Israel, coming like a storm and covering the land like a cloud.
Ezekiel 38:10 This says the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass (during the latter years), that at the same time things come into your heart, and you (Gog of Magog) shall think an evil thought: 11 You shall say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell in safety, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates, 12 To take a booty, and to take plunder; to turn your hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land. 13 Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto you, have you come to take a spoil? Have you gathered your company to take booty? To carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take great plunder? (Words in italics brackets added.)
Ezekiel 38:13 “Sheba, Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and all their young lions will say to you, ‘Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?’”
In ancient times Sheba was on the south-eastern point of Arabia, and from their trading ships travelled to and from eastern world. Dedan was in Ethiopia and from there camel trains and ships travelled to and from Africa. Tarshish was a name given to a number of Mediterranean ports and from these ports, trading ships travelled to and from the western world.
Thus verse 13 tells us that traders from all over the world, will be so sure that Gog of Magog will quickly defeat the Jews, they will negotiate with Gog for the rights to take and deliver the plunder from Judah and Jerusalem around the world.
Ezekiel 38:14 Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, “This says the LORD GOD: “On that day when my people of Israel dwell safely, you shall not know it.
Because God’s people have put their trust in God, they dwell in safety. But Gog does not know this. He only sees in the natural. He sees unwalled villages and cities. He sees an Israeli army that is vastly outnumbered and equipped with inferior weapons. The Children of Israel have put their trust in God. Gog has put his trust in the latest horses and chariots, but God is drawing the armies of Gog into a trap.
Psalm 20:7 Some they trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.
Ezekiel 38:15 Then you shall come from your place out of the northern parts, you and many people with you, all of them riding on horses, a great company and a mighty army. 16 You shall come up against My people Israel as a cloud, to cover the land. It will be in the latter days, that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me, when I show My righteousness through you, O Gog, before their eyes.”
If you compare verses 8 & 9 with verses 14 to 16, you will see both passages are looking at the same thing, but from a different angle. In both passages Gog is coming against the Children of Israel who now dwell in safety. Also in both passages the armies of Gog are described as covering the land like a cloud. Then in both verses 8 & 16 it tells us that it will be in the latter years (the latter days) that the armies of Gog will come against the people of Israel like a cloud, to cover the land.
The Scriptures often gives us multiple views of the same thing, and also they often jump back and forward in time. For those who have eyes to see and hears to hear, this helps us to build up a clear understanding of God’s Written Word, but to all others no understanding will be given.
Ezekiel 38:17 This says the Lord GOD: “Are you he of whom I spoken in former days by My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied for years in those days that I would bring you against them?
Ezekiel is not the only prophet of God that prophesied the destruction of the armies of the world upon the mountains of Israel. Both Joel (3:9 – 17) and Isaiah (17:12 – 14) prophesied these things.
Isaiah 17:12 Woe to the multitude of many people, who make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters! 13 The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far away, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind. 14 Then look and see, at evening time trouble; and before the morning he is no more. This is the portion of them who plunder us, and the lot of them that rob us.
The armies of Gog of Magog came to plunder and to rob the Children of Israel, but they shall become as chaff on the mountains of Judah before the wind. This is the portion of those who plunder the Children of Israel and the lot of those who rob God’s Children.
God’s judgement against Gog.
Ezekiel 38:18 It shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come against the land of Israel, says the Lord GOD, that my fury shall come up in my face. 19 For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath I have spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel; 20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the birds of the sky, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men who are upon the face of the earth, shall tremble at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
The armies of Gog are out there in the open camped on the mountains and in the valleys, and this great earthquake comes. This is a strange earthquake, mountains come down and the steep places fall, and every wall of protection shall fall down. But there is no mention of the homes of the Children of Israel coming down. Because God is well able to protect His own in the midst of great destruction. Confusion will come upon the armies of Gog and they shall turn on each other. Flooding rain and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone will fall upon them from the skies.
Ezekiel 38:21 And I will call for a sword against Gog throughout all my mountains, says the Lord GOD: every man's sword shall be against his brother. 22 And I will bring judgement against him with pestilence and with bloodshed; and I will rain upon him, and upon his hordes, and upon the many troops who are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. 23 Thus will I magnify myself, and show myself righteousness; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD.
