7. THE REBUILDING OF BABYLON.
Zechariah Chapter 5:5 – 11
In its former glory; Babylon was the capital of the world. Is it possible that Babylon will once again become the capital of the world, perhaps the centre of the world banking system, the headquarters of United Nations (or its successor)? Are there any Biblical prophecies that may indicate this? Yes there are. In this chapter we look at Zechariah Chapter 5:5 – 11 to see whether or not this passage indicate a future restoration Babylon to its former glory.
Zechariah 5:1 Then I turned, and lifted up my eyes, looked, and saw a flying scroll. 2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” And I answered, “I see a flying scroll; it length being twenty cubits, and the breadth being ten cubits.” 3 Then said he unto me, “This is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that steals, according to this side of the scroll, shall be acquitted; and every one that swears, according to that side, shall be acquitted. 4 I will bring it forth,” says the LORD of hosts, “And it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that swears falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it along with its timber and stones.”
In verses 3 & 4 we are told that a curse goes out over the face of the whole earth, and everyone who steals and everyone who swears will be expelled and their house consumed. (It is the Hebrew ‘naqah’, meaning ‘to be free, acquitted’ that is here translated as ‘expelled’.) In years gone by, when kings wanted to populate new lands, or increase the numbers of labourers in lands or areas where there too few workers, criminals would be acquitted, and deported to distant lands as labourers.
As we read on, we find out where these criminals will be deported to.
Zechariah 5:5 Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, “Now lift up your eyes, and see what is this that goes forth.” 6 And I said, “What is it?” And he said; “This is a basket that goes forth.” He said, “Moreover, this is their resemblance through all the earth. 7 Look;” there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this woman that sits in the midst of the basket. 8 And he said, “This is wickedness.” And he cast it into the midst of the basket; and he cast the weight of lead upon the baskets mouth.
Their resemblance: What the gathering of and the deportation all these criminals from throughout the earth will look like. All these wicked people are held captive in a basket, a basket that can be used to transport these people.
Zechariah 5:9 Then I lifted up my eyes, and looked, and, saw two women coming forth, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the basket between the earth and the sky. 10 Then said I to the angel that talked with me, to where, do these carry the basket? 11 And he said unto me, to build for it a house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.
Babylon was built in the land of Shinar. So this vision is telling us of the deportation of criminals from around the world to Babylon. It is also very likely that this deportation will include large numbers of Israelites. As Zechariah wrote this after the captives had been returned from Babylon in 538 BC. We know Zechariah is not writing about the building of ancient Babylon, but rather a future rebuilding of Babylon that is still to come.
