Israel became a nation in 1948; was this a prophetic fulfillment?
I was asked the question, Israel became a nation on May 15th 1948; was this a prophetic fulfillent of the Scriptures? and please explain your answer.
First; no I do not believe this was a prophetic fulfillment of the Scriptures.
After the death of King Solomon, the kingdom of Israel divided into two kingdoms; one the northern kingdom of Israel, the other the southern kingdom of Judah. After this; regardless of which of the twelve tribes they were born into, it was not usual for all those who lived in the southern kingdom of Judah, to be called the Children of Judah; and for those who lived in the northern kingdom, to be called the children of Israel.
When the northern kingdom fell, the children of Israel were scattered; and when the southern kingdom fell, the children of Judah were taken captive to Babylon. Although the children of Judah returned to the Promised Land after the fall of Babylon, and since 1945, we have again seen and ever increasing number of the children of Judah returning, we have not yet seen the return of the children of Israel who are descendants of those who lived in the northern of Israel.
The prophet Jeremiah writes
Jeremiah 50:4 In those days, and in that time, says the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God.
This prophecy has not yet been fulfilled.
Now let us look at Ezekiel 37:15 – 22:
Back ground info first.
The central range of mountains in the northern kingdom of Israel was known as Mt Ephraim. While the whole table land of Judah was known as Mt Judah. Joshua the son of Nun was buried in the mount of Ephraim (Judges 2:9).
So when it says in
Ezekiel 37:16 Moreover, you son of man, take you one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions:
Judah, and all the children of Israel that are his companions, are those who lived in the southern kingdom of Judah and their descendants. While Ephraim and all the children of Israel that are his companions, are those who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel and their descendants. Yes with the death of King Solomon the kingdom was divided in two, but there is a time coming when the two kingdoms (the two sticks) shall once again be joined together to make one kingdom (one stick).
Ezekiel 37:19 Say unto them, Therefore says the Lord GOD; look and see, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows (the northern kingdom of Israel), and will put them with him, even with the stick of (southern kingdom) Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.
Ezekiel 37:22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:
Yes the kingdom was divided into two kingdoms. Yes the northern kingdom of Israel was scattered and latter the southern kingdom of Judah was taken captive to Babylon. Yes we have seen a return of a remnant of those who are of the southern kingdom of Judah, but to this day we have not seen a return of those who are of the northern kingdom of Israel. Therefore the descendants of Jacob two are still divided as two nations, as two kingdoms. They have not both become one nation and one kingdom, therefore this prophecy in Ezekiel chapter 37 has not yet been fulfilled.
