05 Only Begotten Son of God

THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD.

By Kenneth Allan Clark.

To become a son of God.

A question often asked concerning the deity of Jesus Christ, is how come we know Jesus Christ as the only begotten of the Father? To answer that question, first let us consider, how come we are known as the sons of God?

Jesus Christ is known as The Son of God, and we, the born again believers in Jesus Christ, are known as the sons of God. How come?

Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in the sky through Christ: 4 Just as He has chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he has made us highly favoured in the beloved.

Before the foundation of the world, every person that would ever live was both predestined to be born on this earth and predestined to be adopted as sons of God. In Biblical language, to be adopted as a son, means to be legally recognized and declared by the father to be his son. In the ancient Jewish world a male child was considered to be a child and no different from a slave, until the time appointed by the father. At the appointed time, the father would take his male child and heir to a public place, and there in front of witnesses he would declare; “This my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.” From that moment on the child was legally recognized as the father’s son.

Before God laid the foundations of this world, it was His intention that we all would be adopted as sons of God. But when we were born form out of our mother’s womb and into this world, we were not even considered to be children of God. God does not even give us the legal right to become his child, until we first choose to receive Jesus Christ and believe in His name. “For as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become the children of God” (John 1:12). Although believing, and having become heirs of God, we did not differ at all from a bondservant, until the time appointed by God our Father. The time when God our Father would take us to a public place and declare; “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.” And that public place is at our baptism into Christ. For it is there God’s Word declares us to be his sons (Galatians 3:26 – 4:7).

Galatians 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For you are all the sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Although the day we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, we are born again into the kingdom above, it is not until our baptism into Christ, that the Holy Spirit comes upon us, and we are legally adopted as a son of God.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of son ship, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

The Greek word translated as adoption in verse 15, does not mean to be adopted as a child; it means to be adopted as an adult son, with all power and authority over the father’s estate.

In order to legally become The Son of God; Jesus first had to become both a child and an heir of God. Then at the time appointed by God the Father, Jesus was taken to a public place, His baptism, where God the Father declared; “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” It was then that Jesus Christ became the Only Begotten Son of God.

In II Samuel chapter 7 verses 11b to verse 16, the prophet Nathan prophesies concern the coming Messiah (Jesus Christ), which God would raise from the offspring of David to succeed David, whose throne and kingdom God would establish forever.

II Samuel 22:14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he does wrong I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the sons of men.

The overall content of the Old Testament Scriptures is such that I believe I can safely say, The God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit have always existed as One God yet three persons. Although before the beginning they did not relate to each other as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for the purpose of the redemption of mankind, God the Son submitted Himself to God the Father, and took upon Himself the role of a child of God; a child who is no different to a bondservant. Then at His baptism, when God the Father declared over Jesus, “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased,” Jesus legally became the only begotten of God the Father.

Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD has said unto me, you are my Son; this day have I begotten you.

Psalm 89:26 He shall cry unto me, you are my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. 27 Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

John writes (John 1:14) “We beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father.”

In John 1:14, it is the Greek word theaomai, (meaning, to see, to look closely at, to perceive) which is here translated as beheld.

It is the Greek word hos, (meaning, as in that manner or as in like manner) which is here translated into the English word as.

It is the Greek word monogenes, (meaning only born or first born) which is here translated as begotten.

We are sons of God, not because we were born sons of God; but because God the Father beheld us and saw us as sons of God, and then at our baptism into Christ, God the Father declared us to be sons of God.

Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, not because He was the first born or only born of God, but because God the Father beheld Jesus and saw Him as His only begotten Son, and then at His baptism, God declared Jesus to be His only begotten Son.

God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all one God. The Holy Trinity is One God yet three persons all having no beginning and no end.

Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.

The following two passages from the Bible identify those who are the sons of God.

Galatians 3:26 For you are all the sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

First we will look at the out working of the Spirit of God coming upon Jesus Christ and leding Him in His daily walk with God the Father. After all, Jesus Christ is the example that we should live by.

John 1:32 And John testified, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from the sky like a dove, and it remained upon him. 33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, the same said unto me, upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, this is he whom baptizes in the Holy Spirit. 34 And I saw, and testified that this is the Son of God.

Matthew 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, look, the sky was opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And listen! A voice from the sky, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Matthew 4:1 Then was Jesus led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Acts 10:37 That word, I say, you know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

• It was not until He was baptized with the baptism of repentance that the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus Christ and remained upon Him. (John 1:33)

• It was not until He was baptized, that Jesus Christ was baptized with the Holy Spirit and power. (Acts 10:37)

• It was not until after He was both baptized in water and the Holy Spirit, that God the Father declared Jesus to be His Son. (Matthew 3:16 - 17)

• It was not until after He was both baptized both in water and the Holy Spirit, that Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 4:1)

• It was not until after He was both baptized both in water and the Holy Spirit, that Jesus Christ did and mighty works. (Acts 10:37 & John 2:11)

Has believers in the Good News of Jesus Christ, we follow His example.

• It is not until we are baptized with the baptism of repentance, that we will receive the promised gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the deliverance from sin; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is unto you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call.”

• It is not until we are baptized for repentance, and the Holy Spirit as come upon us, that we also receive power. The same power that Jesus Christ received when the Holy Spirit came upon Him.

Acts 1:8a But you shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit has come upon you:

• It is not until after we have been baptized into Christ and are lead by the Holy Spirit, that God the Father declares us to be His sons. (Galatians 3:26 – 27, & Romans 8:14)

• After we have chosen to believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, and to obey His commands and follow His teachings, we to like Jesus Christ will do many mighty works.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go into all the world, and preach the good news to every creature. 16 He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believes not shall be condemned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 they shall take up snakes; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into the sky, and sat on the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

As sons of God, like Jesus Christ did before us, we to can quote from the book of Isaiah the prophet, and boldly declare,

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor; He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and the recovery of sight to the blind, to send away ones having been oppressed with deliverance, 19 to preach the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18 – 19).

Jesus Christ, the promised seed of Abraham.

In Genesis, it says Abraham had two sons; the first to be born was first Ishmael, the second to be born was Isaac. But go to Hebrews and it says;

Hebrews 11:17  By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

So according to the Scriptures, Isaac was the second born of two sons born to Abraham; yet he was also declared Abraham’s only begotten son. One is not born the only begotten son, it is title the father declares over his chosen son and heir.

Abraham; Abraham gave the title of “only begotten son” to Isaac, because he was the son of promise, through whom God promised (Jesus Christ) the seed of Abraham.

Romans 9:6b For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel. 7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children (of Abraham): but, In Isaac shall your seed be called. 8 That is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. 9 For this is the word of promise, at this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.

Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. God did not say, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to your seed, which is Christ. - - - - - - -  29 And if you be Christ's, then are you Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise

Acts 13:32 And we declare unto you good news, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, 33 God has fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he has raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, You are my Son, this day have I begotten you.

Jesus Christ, the firstborn Son of God.

The last of the plagues the Egyptians suffered before the released Israel was the plague of the firstborn sons of Egypt. While God spared the firstborn sons of Israel, by allowing them to offer up as a blood sacrifice to God a lamb; a lamb per house whole. The lambs became (in the eyes of God the judge) the firstborn sons of Israel.

Just as God saw the lambs as the first born sons of Israel, so also God the Father also sees The Word of God in the flesh as his only begotten (his firstborn). In John 1:14 it does not say Jesus Christ was the only begotten, but that we saw him as the only begotten (the firstborn son of God).

God the Father not only looks upon Jesus Christ as his firstborn, God also sees him as the firstborn of all creation.

Colossians 1:12 Giving thanks unto the Father, who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13 Who has rescued us from the power of darkness, and has translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son: 14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the deliverance from sins: 15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

As the firstborn of every creature God the Father sees Jesus Christ as The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

John 1:29 The next day John sees Jesus coming unto him, and said, Look and see the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.

It is not by law but by grace. If God sees it in his mind’s eye and God declares it, then it is so.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we have looked closely at his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

Mark 1:9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. 10 And straight away coming up out of the water, he saw the sky opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: 11 And there came a voice from the sky, saying, You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Psalm 2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. 7 I will declare the decree: the LORD has said unto me, you are my Son; this day have I begotten you.

When did God the Father first publicly declare Jesus to be his Son? At his baptism. In this Jesus Christ set an example for us to follow, for it is at our baptism that God our Father declares us to be no longer his children but now we are his sons.

Galatians 3:26 For you are all the sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

God bless you all,
Prophet Ken Clark.
